For years, compound archers have watched the Olympics from the sidelines. While recurve bows have dominated the Games, the modern, precision-driven compound bow — beloved by competitive archers and hunters alike — has never had its moment on the world’s biggest stage. That’s about to change at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, when compound archery makes its long-awaited Olympic debut.

A New Event, A New Opportunity

The Games will feature a compound mixed team event, pairing one man and one woman per team. Athletes will compete head-to-head in a format familiar from world championships and World Cup stages, but now the stakes are Olympic medals. This inclusion is more than just a new event — it’s recognition of a discipline that has grown massively in popularity over the past few decades.

Why This Matters

For compound archers, this is huge. The Olympics is the pinnacle of sport, and for too long, compound shooters have been excluded. Now, they finally have a platform that gives them the same visibility and prestige as recurve athletes.

It also sends a powerful message to young archers and club shooters: there’s a path to the top of the sport with the bow you love. National federations are already planning programs to cultivate top talent, and fans can expect the competition to be fierce.

Voices from the Archery World

Top compound archers are thrilled. U.S. champion James Lutz called it “a huge step forward for our sport,” highlighting that Olympic inclusion will change how athletes train, compete, and inspire the next generation. Fans agree — the speed, accuracy, and intensity of compound archery translate perfectly to the Olympic stage, promising thrilling matches for spectators worldwide.

The Road to LA28

Qualification for the event will take place through upcoming international tournaments, including world championships and continental qualifiers. Teams will compete for quota spots, ensuring that only the best make it to Los Angeles. Over the next few years, the sport will grow in intensity and visibility as nations prepare their strongest shooters for this historic moment.

A Moment for the Entire Archery Community

Even if you’re not an Olympic competitor, this is exciting news. The debut of compound archery elevates the sport, draws new fans, and celebrates a discipline that has long been overshadowed. By 2028, expect compound archery to have the spotlight it deserves, inspiring a new generation of archers along the way.

As December arrives, the whitetail rut gradually winds down across much of the country. The peak breeding phase is behind us, and deer behavior begins to shift as colder temperatures settle in and late-season food sources become increasingly important. While the explosive activity of November fades, this period still plays a significant role in the annual whitetail cycle and offers unique opportunities for hunters and wildlife observers. By early December, most does have already been bred, and mature bucks begin to show the effects of weeks of relentless movement.

Their travel patterns slow as energy levels drop, and they become more focused on recovery. Bucks often retreat to secure bedding cover while working to rebuild fat reserves lost during the intensity of the rut. This is when reliable food sources—cut corn, soybeans, brassicas, acorns, and winter wheat—start to draw consistent deer activity. Although peak chasing has ended, December still sees what many hunters call the “secondary rut.”

This occurs when unbred does or late-cycling yearlings come into estrus. The activity is far less widespread than the primary rut, but it can spark unexpected midday movement as bucks respond to these remaining breeding opportunities. In areas with balanced herd ratios, this secondary uptick can be noticeably more pronounced. Weather becomes a major driving factor during this stage.

Cold fronts, snow cover, and dropping temperatures tend to concentrate deer around reliable food sources, increasing predictability. Mature bucks, typically more cautious after the chaos of November, may still move in daylight when a strong weather shift pushes them to feed earlier. By late December, the rut’s influence has nearly disappeared. The whitetail world transitions fully into winter survival mode, making food and thermal cover the central focus for deer across all age classes.

For those who continue studying or pursuing whitetails into the late season, understanding these December behavioral changes is key to interpreting patterns and activity during the final stretch of the year.

Stay Sharp This Winter: Choosing the Right BIGSHOT Archery Target

Cold weather doesn’t mean your shooting season has to end. In fact, consistent practice through winter can help maintain your form, accuracy, and confidence until spring. Choosing the right target for winter conditions — when temperatures drop, moisture increases, and daylight is limited — can make your practice sessions more productive and enjoyable.

For general practice and broadhead tuning, foam block and layered targets are a solid choice. Their construction allows arrows to penetrate and hold without excessive force, while still allowing relatively easy removal in chilly conditions. Focused, repeatable practice on a reliable target keeps your fundamentals dialed in even when it’s too cold for regular field sessions.

For shooters with high kinetic speed bows or crossbows, higher-rated targets built to withstand fast arrows help reduce pass-throughs and preserve target life. These choices allow winter practice with confidence, reducing frustration that comes from arrows shooting through or deforming target faces.

3-D and animal-shaped targets are another option for cold months. They simulate real game profiles and help keep practice varied and fun when you’re not in the woods. Their lifelike shapes encourage shooters to practice different aiming points and scenarios, preserving hunting focus during the off-season.

Selecting the right target for winter practice means balancing durability, arrow holding, and ease of use — all while matching your bow type and intended practice goals.

The Thanksgiving 2025 whitetail rut is sliding into that intense window where everything starts to shift, and this Rut Tracker update breaks down exactly how to stay lethal in the woods right now. Cooler temps are finally pushing mature bucks out of their safe patterns, reopening scrapes overnight and putting younger bucks on their feet, cruising the edges right after first light. The biggest change is the doe-tending phase: mature bucks are slipping off with hot does, vanishing into pockets of cover for a day or two and making the woods feel quiet even though they are still on the move.

In this video, we talk through how to hunt that “quiet” rut, when the best bucks are sneaking between cover, cutting through funnels, and constantly checking the wind for their next opportunity. With snow in the mix, movement often spikes right before and right after a light snowfall, so keying in on those short weather windows can be the difference between an empty tag and wrapping one around a heavy, rutted-up buck. You’ll see why downwind edges of bedding areas, tight transition lines, and overlooked funnels are the highest-odds spots when bucks are locked on does but still searching for the next one.

This Thanksgiving, the focus is on discipline and patience: trusting the sign, reading the wind, and sitting long enough for a mature buck to make a mistake. Whether you hunt from a saddle, stand, or blind, this breakdown gives you a simple game plan you can plug into your own ground right away, from big timber to small parcels. If you are serious about understanding late-November rut behavior—and want to capitalize on one of the most underrated windows of the entire season—this Rut Tracker episode is for you.

Welcome to the Mid-November Rut Tracker! As we move deeper into the whitetail rut, conditions are heating up, and bowhunters across the country are seeing some of the most exciting action of the season. This update breaks down what bowhunters can expect in mid-November, including deer movement patterns, breeding activity, and strategies to increase your chances of a successful hunt.

At this point in the season, mature bucks are actively cruising for does, and movement is often concentrated during daylight hours, especially around food sources, travel corridors, and bedding areas. With the rut in full swing in many regions, hunters are likely to encounter more vocal deer, including rubs, scrapes, and frequent chasing activity. Understanding the stage of the rut in your area is key—some regions may be in peak rut, while others are still ramping up or winding down.

Bowhunters should be paying close attention to wind direction and thermals, as bucks are on high alert during the mid-November period. Stand placement near food, funnels, or areas of fresh sign can yield more encounters. Trail cameras and scouting reports can help fine-tune locations, and positioning yourself in areas that intersect natural deer travel routes will increase the odds of crossing paths with a mature buck.

This video also covers tips for reading rubs, scrapes, and tracks to interpret which bucks are actively breeding and which areas are hotspots for deer activity. Knowing the difference between preliminary rut signs and full rut behavior can make a huge difference in planning your hunts.

Whether you’re hunting public land or private property, understanding deer behavior during the mid-November rut is essential for success. Stay tuned to the Rut Tracker series for ongoing updates on whitetail movement, buck activity, and tactical bowhunting insights that can help you fill your tag.

Rut Tracker 2025: RUT ON! – The bucks are definitely on the march, and there’s no mistaking it—rut activity is heating up fast. Over the past few days, their behavior has shifted dramatically. Instead of focusing on feeding patterns, mature bucks are burning daylight searching for does. They’re covering ground, moving from one doe group to another, and checking every thicket, creek crossing, and cutover for the slightest scent of a receptive female. The does and fawns are still primarily focused on feeding, keeping to their regular patterns around food sources, but the bucks have a completely different agenda now. Every move they make is fueled by testosterone and instinct.

You can see it in the sign they’re leaving behind. Rubs are popping up everywhere—freshly shredded saplings, rubbed cedar trunks, and torn-up shrubs mark their travel routes. Scrapes are being reopened and worked over with new aggression, often showing up overnight in areas that were quiet just a week ago. The bucks are laying down their scent and staking their claims, making sure every doe in the area knows they’re around and ready. Their tarsal glands are dark and stained from repeated marking, leaving no question that the breeding season is nearly upon us.

No doe group seems to be left unvisited for long. It’s clear that every mature buck has one thing on his mind. The woods are alive with movement and anticipation, and hunters can feel it in the air. All these bucks need now is just a little more estrus scent floating around to push them completely over the edge. When that happens, chaos will break loose in the whitetail woods, and anything can happen.

Now is also the perfect time to stay sharp and make sure your shot is dialed in. Practice is always important, especially with high-pressure moments right around the corner. The Bloodline Buck XL 3D Archery Target from Delta McKenzie is built for serious bowhunters who want realistic, durable practice before the season’s peak. This target can take broadheads or field tips from bows pushing 350+ fps, with a replaceable E-Z Flex foam vital core that allows for easy arrow removal and extended target life. Shoot it from multiple angles, work on those quartering shots, and be ready for when the real thing steps out.

The rut is here—make every shot count.

Halloween is here, and the rut is almost upon us. Bucks are tearing up the woods with fresh scrapes, and new, bold bucks are showing up on cameras—aggressive, unpredictable, and full of energy.

We are dangerously close to go time. In this episode of Rut Tracker: Halloween 2025, we’re breaking down everything hunters live for: fresh scrapes, thick rubs, daylight movement, and shifting patterns in bedding and feeding areas. Bucks are changing their routines daily—dominant bucks are testing the edges of their territory, while younger bucks are sneaking in, trying to make a name for themselves.

The woods are alive with action, and the tension is building. The Rut Tracker is creeping closer to the magic 90%, and this week, bucks are the driving force. Sightings have spiked compared to previous weeks, and the deer are showing up at unexpected times in unexpected places. Most of the action has been younger bucks so far—but when the old, dominant bucks hit the scene, the rut will explode. That’s when the chase begins, and it’s only a matter of days before we’re headed for the stands, ready for the hunt of the season.

Get ready—the countdown to the rut is on, and the woods are about to get wild.

Rut Prep-Tools

The Predator Series from Delta McKenzie is designed for serious archers and bowhunters who demand durability, precision, and long-lasting performance. These targets are built with high-density, layered foam capable of stopping high-velocity arrows, including broadheads, without compromising the integrity of the target. The foam is engineered to self-heal, which extends the life of the target even after repeated use.

The series includes a variety of sizes and models to accommodate different shooting needs. Smaller models, like the 13-inch and 16-inch Predator HP (High Performance), are ideal for close-range practice or limited shooting spaces, yet are capable of handling arrows traveling at high speeds. Larger models, such as the 24-inch and 36-inch technical targets, are designed for full-scale practice, offering ample surface area and removable foam cores for maintenance and longevity. These larger targets are rated for even higher arrow velocities, making them suitable for compound bows and crossbows.

Whether you are tuning broadheads, practicing precision shots, or preparing for hunting season, the Predator Series provides consistent performance and reliability. Its combination of toughness, versatility, and realistic target design makes it a top choice for archers seeking professional-grade training targets that can withstand heavy use over time.

The Rut Tracker is slowly climbing toward the magic 90% mark, and the woods are buzzing with activity. This week’s movement has been almost entirely buck-driven, with sightings up dramatically over prior weeks. Bucks are moving more than ever, showing up at unexpected times and in places that catch even seasoned hunters off guard. It’s exciting to see the forest alive with action, but most of these sightings are younger bucks still learning their place in the hierarchy.

The big, mature “old boys” haven’t fully made themselves known yet. Once they start hitting the trails, the rut will be in full swing, and hunters everywhere will be heading to their deer stands with anticipation. Until then, observing the younger bucks is still valuable—it gives insight into how deer are moving in your area and can help you adjust your strategies before the real action starts.

Maximize Your Practice with Realistic Simulation

For bowhunters, now is the perfect time to sharpen skills before the mature bucks hit the trails. One way to get serious practice without waiting for the woods to cooperate is the BIGSHOT Video Wall System. This isn’t just any target—it’s a training tool designed for real-world hunting scenarios. What makes it especially powerful is the ability to upload your own trail camera footage directly onto the wall. That means you can practice shooting at the exact bucks you’ve been tracking, replicating their movements, behaviors, and positions.

With lifelike simulations and instant shot feedback, the system allows you to fine-tune your aim, timing, and decision-making. You can walk to your stand with confidence, knowing you’ve already practiced realistic encounters under pressure. It’s like a dress rehearsal for the rut.

Learn more about BIGSHOT Video Wall System options here.

Looking Ahead to Peak Rut

The current activity is just a taste of what’s coming. As the Tracker moves closer to 90% and mature bucks start roaming, movement patterns will intensify. Scrapes, rubs, and daylight cruising will increase, and moments that you’ve been anticipating all year will be here. Staying in tune with the Tracker, observing younger bucks, and practicing with realistic tools like the BIGSHOT Video Wall will make you ready for the peak action.

Patience now pays off later—the right preparation and timing can turn this rut into some of the most memorable hunting of the season.

By Stephen Mack

There’s a moment in the forest when everything slows down. The wind through the trees becomes a whisper, the rustle of leaves a heartbeat, and the world narrows to a single point of focus. In that stillness, the tools a hunter carries are no longer just equipment—they are extensions of instinct, skill, and patience. For generations, Bear Archery has built bows that honor this connection, bridging the gap between hunter and hunt.

Fred Bear, the founder of Bear Archery, once said, “Go afield with a good attitude, with respect for the wildlife you hunt and for the forest and fields in which you walk. Immerse yourself in the outdoor experience. It will cleanse your soul and make you a better person.” This ethos guides the design and philosophy of Bear bows, which are created to help hunters engage fully with their surroundings and the act of hunting itself.

Bear’s approach focuses on harmony with the hunt. Every curve, balance point, and draw weight is thoughtfully designed to complement the natural rhythm of the hunter’s movements. The goal is not to make a bow that outshines others but to create a tool that feels intuitive, allowing hunters to immerse themselves in the experience—the anticipation, the strategy, and the quiet thrill.

Check out the 2026 Bear Archery Line-Up Here

As Fred Bear wisely noted, “Nothing clears a troubled mind better than shooting a bow.” In the solitude of the woods, a bow becomes more than a piece of equipment; it can help bring focus, clarity, and a deeper connection to the outdoors.

Bowhunting is a discipline that rewards patience, observation, and respect for the environment. Bear bows are designed to support that mindset, encouraging hunters to refine their skills, read the landscape, and engage fully with every step of the pursuit. Fred Bear captured this idea when he said, “A hunt based only on trophies taken falls far short of what the ultimate goal should be… time to commune with your inner soul as you share the outdoors with the birds, animals, and fish that live there.”

Beyond the design of the bows themselves, Bear Archery fosters a community built on shared values: mentorship, conservation, and the enduring spirit of the hunt. From youth programs to veteran hunters, the company encourages learning, experience, and the traditions that make bowhunting more than a hobby—it’s a craft.

Fred Bear also reflected, “I hunt because I love the entire process: the preparations, the excitement, and sustained suspense of trying to match my woodslore against the finely honed instincts of these creatures.” That focus on process over outcome is at the heart of Bear Archery’s philosophy.

The forest is a classroom, and the bow is both a tool and a teacher. A Bear bow doesn’t claim superiority; it simply invites the hunter to engage, reflect, and grow. It transforms the pursuit from a task into an experience—full of patience, awareness, and respect for the natural world.

From field to forest, Bear Archery supports hunters in experiencing the full spectrum of the hunt—the anticipation, the strategy, and the quiet moments of connection. In the hands of a hunter, it’s more than equipment; it’s a companion for the journey, helping make each outing meaningful in its own way.
Rut Activity Update: October 16, 2025 – Bucks Increasing Movement Patterns (Rut Activity Index: 20%)

The whitetail woods are starting to come alive. Bucks are on the move, covering more ground than they were just a week ago. Most of this isn’t about chasing does yet—it’s early pre-rut behavior driven by surging testosterone. They’re laying down the first scrapes and rubs, expanding travel routes, and spending more time checking ridges and corridors that connect bedding and feeding areas.

Does are still locked into food sources, hitting mast crops and ag residue hard, which makes those areas hotspots for both sexes right now. Mature bucks have been slipping into these zones briefly—feeding for 15–20 minutes before disappearing again. That means your best shot right now is catching them along the travel routes leading in and out of these feeding areas.

Keep in mind, the so-called “October lull” is near. Activity doesn’t shut down, but deer do get more cautious and may shift to heavier cover or move more after dark, especially in pressured areas.

Gear & Prep Check
If you haven’t been putting in regular practice sessions, now’s the time. A chance at a mature buck can come fast—confidence in your shooting is everything. Training with Delta McKenzie Targets gives you realistic shot placement practice that translates directly to the stand. When the moment comes, your muscle memory should take over.

Scouting is just as important. Your trail cameras hold the story of which deer are moving and when—but only if you can sort through the footage efficiently. That’s where the Lowdown Viewer shines. It’s the fastest and clearest way to review images and videos in the field, so you can adjust stands and strategies based on real-time intel instead of guesswork.

The rut is close. In the next 1–2 weeks, expect activity to escalate quickly. Stay consistent, stay sharp, and be ready when the opportunity presents itself.
