The technology behind bow shootability and accuracy continues to march forward, and that has huge implications for target shooting. Almost every major bow manufacturer has a model dedicated to target shooting, and there are many updated and brand new models for 2017. Here’s a look at some of today’s top compound target bows.
New Breed Archery has been working to create the ultimate target bow for eight years. The result is the Cyborg 2. This bow combines the proven features of the Cyborg and the innovative features of the Elevation. New Breed gave the Cyborg 2 a considerable 37-inch axle-to-axle length, with a super-smooth draw cycle and a forgiving 7¾-inch brace height for nail-driving accuracy. Strategically placed limb and cable stops deliver a rock solid back wall and aid in tuning of the bow. The torqueless-free grip with Bowjax dampening inserts is set in-line so the limb pivots off the riser, giving it the extra increase in accuracy needed for serious tournament competition.

The Cyborg 2 features a unique hybrid riser that allows for no hand shock and features a new gusset brace fluted riser design made with the highest grade aircraft aluminum. The short limb configuration and all new Bionix Two Track 2.5 dual cam-to-cam modular system round out the package for unbelievable stability and accuracy.

Shooters also will like the secondary rear stabilizer insert which allows for easy installation of back weights, offset bars or a full set of rear-mounted V-Bars. There’s no doubt this bow is built to meet your individual bow balancing needs. And, like all New Breed bows, the Cyborg 2 is made in the United States and hand assembled by one person from start to finish, using only the highest quality parts available. No mass-produced assembly lines means a better quality finished product.

From the new hybrid cable slide system to all titanium and stainless steel hardware, prepare to rise to the top of your game with the New Breed Cyborg 2!

Watch as Patrick Meitin describes the new Hoyt Pro Defiant in a comprehensive compound bow review. Some familiar features of this bow remain, such as the DFX Cam and ½ system and UltraFlex Limbs. Other features include multilayer lamination construction and Parallel Split Limb technologies. DFX Cams allow this compound to adjust 2 inches of draw length within a single cam set, add 3.45 inches to the overall bow length at full draw, and allow the peep to sit closer to the eye for better head positioning and more accurate aiming. The DFX-Ultra-Flex combination has gained a solid reputation with serious shooters for maximizing effective string angle, optimizing peep positioning, and providing more comfortable and consistent anchoring- and shooting-form dynamics.

Hoyt Pro Defiant has PerfectBalance Stabilization System and Offset Riser Technology that ensure it is one of the quietest, most well-balanced bows on the market. Short bows tend to be top- or front-heavy, but Hoyt has perfected the art of balancing a bow. Even with added accessories, it is very difficult to throw the bow off balance. This compound allows for a cleaner shot without having to worry about the shooters torque or hold it steady. Along with superior balance, the silence of this compound is profound and consistent, even without all of the extraneous silencer equipment. Uniform Stress Distribution Limbs, DFX Cam system, the StealthShot string stop, and the Zero Torque Cable Guard System allow the Hoyt Pro Defiant to eliminate any possible noise or vibration, thus creating a stealthy shot. Hoyt also included the Limb Shox five-fin silencer and Shock Rod Technology in the In-Line Roller Cable Guard for improved noise control. Finally, Hoyt’s ingenious introduction of Silent Shelf Technology prevents errant and all-too-common arrow clicks on the riser shelf.

On the range, 60 arrows were shot without one foot-per-second in speed variation within a single-arrow set. This translates into an accurate shot with a professional compound bow. Hoyt’s Pro Defiant compound bow is deadly silent, plenty fast for speed freaks, and as accurate as your abilities allow. As Hoyt puts it, “The Pro Defiant is purpose-built for the most serious, demanding bowhunters on the planet.”

Kitchener, Ontario, Canada – Excalibur’s Micro Suppressor, the brand’s 2017 flagship crossbow, is a revolution in size and sound. The crossbow is deadly quiet, the most compact Micro crossbow ever designed by the company, and still capable of firing bolts at speeds up to 355 fps.

“The Micro crossbow series has been incredibly popular with our customers for several years, and we know the Micro Suppressor is the best one yet,” said Michael Martin, marketing specialist for Excalibur Crossbow. “This crossbow has everything you want in a recurve: compact size, lightweight, high-performance and deadly quiet.”

Built on the Micro 355 platform, the Micro Supressor features the all-new Sound Deadening System, four components working in sync to dramatically reduce vibration and noise when the crossbow is fired. An over-moulded, rubberized stirrup, Ex-Shox, String Stars and R.A.V.S. silencers deliver a smoother, quieter shooting experience, which will lead to greater success in the field.

Also new on the Micro Suppressor is the comfortable and lightweight Bullpup Ready Rest Stock, which reduces the crossbow length by 2.5 inches compared to similar models. The stock comes complete with rubber grip inserts for ultimate control and feel.

Additional features include the Gen II CRT Limb System, the most compact and durable limbs available today, the Quad-Loc riser, Recoil Energy Dissipation System (R.E.D.S.) and Air Brakes limb suppressors.

If the compact and quiet Micro Suppressor isn’t impressive enough on its own, Excalibur has included a new X-Hanger quiver, made from lightweight carbon materials for versatility and maneuverability. The quiver attaches to the Micro Supressor via a Picatinny rail allowing for additional accessory attachments.

Also included with the Micro Suppressor are an ambidextrous cheekpiece, oversized finger guards and the Guardian Anti-Dry-Fire system for ultimate safety and protection. The crossbow comes equipped with a Tact-Zone Illuminated Scope, three Quill arrows, three 150-grain field points and a rope cocking aid.

The Micro Suppressor’s compact size and silent shot make it the most deadly crossbow on the market today. Available in Realtree Xtra® finish, the Micro Suppressor has a suggested retail price of $1,299.

Introducing the all-new Double XL. This 36 3/4” axle-to-axle powerhouse is modeled after the Pro Defiant, and features a 31- 33” draw length range with a full 8 inches of brace height. This rig delivers a serious punch and ultimate stability for the biggest bowhunters out there.

Engineering elements and benefits include:

Offset Riser Technology that kills vibration and adds strength and stiffness.

The smooth, fast and powerful DFX Cam & ½ system.

EFFECTIVE STRING ANGLE AT FULL DRAW

“Reaching” your head forward to your peep is more than just uncomfortable, it’s inconsistent. Hoyt engineered the UltraFlex Limb and DFX Cam Systems to promote comfortable, strain-free posture at full draw by increasing the distance between the cams at full draw. This broader cam-to-cam distance at full draw creates an ideal “flatter” string angle and brings the peep to you. These innovations allow a more relaxed, strain-free posture at full draw, and reduce facial contact, string pressure, and eye fatigue at anchor. The days of “reaching” are over; your days of tight, consistent groups have arrived.

The result is a 2017 30.5-inch bow that feels and performs like previous 34-inch equivalents, meaning that the compact version will feel and perform like a stable and forgiving 34-inch bow. Similarly, a 34-inch bow will perform like a 37-inch dream bow, and a 36.75-inch bow feels and performs like a stable and forgiving 40-inch bow . If the numbers don’t convince you, your experience at full-draw and your tightened arrow groups will.

Since Hoyt’s invention of the dove-tail system more than thirty years ago, and its immediate acceptance as a universal standard, the system has been imitated by companies the world over. Their efforts have proven one thing: No one does it like Hoyt. The Hoyt team is proud to push the standard even further with the all-new #GrandPrixEpik, built upon the award-winning Earl Hoyt geometry.
The Epik is built specifically to maximize balance and stability without sacrificing the snappiness and responsiveness that recurve shooters appreciate. It also brings several technologies that have previously only been offered on the Formula platform, including the new VertaTune clicker system, new Collet-style tiller bolts and pro-series limb adjustment dowels.

Available in 25” and 23” models.

Crafting high-performance recurve limbs is both a science and an art, and Hoyt has been developing in both respects for more than 86 years. Hoyt is proud to present the culmination of nearly 9 decades of knowledge and experience: the Carbon X-tour, their fastest recurve limb ever.
This premier-level performance limb is available in Hoyt’s proven syntactic foam configuration, as well as an all-new, exclusive engineered laminated bamboo configuration. Both configurations are engineered with high-performance carbon layers to promote the dynamic limb straightness and precision string tracking Hoyt limbs are known for. More information is available on the video posted previously.

Available in short, medium and long lengths, from 22 to 50 pounds in 2 pound increments in both Formula and Grand Prix configurations.

Hoyt Prevail

Year after year, the world’s best archers trust Hoyt bows to do what they do best—win. And year after year, Hoyt bows deliver—dominating tournament circuits and topping podiums worldwide. Hoyt takes that trust seriously, and they feel a responsibility to stand at the cutting edge of the archery industry through ceaseless research, testing, and innovation and through using input from the best archers in the world. Hoyt does all this for one specific purpose: to help you Prevail.

The Prevail 40, Prevail 37, Prevail FX and Prevail FX Short Draw are the result of that process. The Prevail Series introduces a brand new performance-enhancing geometry and two brand new engines to power the bows, the all-new SVX and X3 Cam & ½ Performance Systems. You will also appreciate the all-new rear stabilizer location and the new hard-lock rear stabilizer system. Hoyt’s proven Shoot-Thru Riser Technology, 4-angle modular grip system, and adjustable 4-position cable guard technology are just a few of the other technologies that make the all-new Prevail Series the most advanced target bows in Hoyt’s 86-year history.

SVX & X3 Cam & ½ systems

Introducing the high-powered SVX and the ultra-smooth X3 Cam & ½ systems. The SVX is incredibly smooth and fast, and provides a rock-solid back wall that can be adjusted to your preference using Hoyt’s new adjustable peg system. For a rock-hard wall, archers can utilize the outer peg position, while archers wanting a softer wall can use an inner peg position. The SVX comes with 65% let-off and a full set of draw length modules with every SVX model bow that allow draw length adjustment in ½” increments. The X3 Cam & ½ is even smoother, with a less aggressive back wall. The X3 allows archers to utilize a draw stop peg for an ultra-hard wall, or remove the peg and utilize the new draw stop machined directly into the module for a softer back wall. It is available in 65% or 75% let-off, and comes standard with a rotating inner cam module for easy adjustment in ½” increments. As is always the case with Hoyt cams, both cams are fully optimized for speed and performance by draw length.

PSE Archery has announced the “ultimate evolution” in compound bow cams, the Evolve® Cam System (ECS). This all-new quad-track cam system is the product of years of PSE research, and offers shooters up to 90% let-off without sacrificing speed or power. The ECS is premiering on four bows in the PSE 2017 Pro Series compound bow line; the Carbon Air® 34 ECS, Carbon Air® 32 ECS, Evolve®, and Evolve® 35.
“There has never been another cam system quite like this one,” stated Blake Shelby, VP of Sales and Marketing for PSE. “In the age of comfort bows, we asked ourselves what we could do to apply PSE engineering and our X-Force platform to a high let-off bow. Could we make the ultimate comfort bow and still make it as powerful and as fast as shooters expect from PSE? The answer is yes.”

PSE’s Evolve® Cam System features rotating cam modules designed for maximum ease of adjustment with let-off options up to 90% and all the way down to 65% with the optional low let-off module. Even more impressively, PSE accomplishes this without the need of a bow press and all while achieving high speeds of up to 346 fps at 90% let-off. According to PSE, the ECS eases the shooter smoothly from peak weight into a deep valley before relaxing in a deep pocket and hard back wall.

The 2017 Evolve® and Evolve®35 promise to provide the perfect match of comfort, speed, stability, and accuracy, with the bows featuring not only the new ECS but also PSE’s Wide-Track Limb System and WedgeLock Speed Pocket. They bows also feature built-in rise stabilization ports and PSE’s new RollerGlyde cable guard for the smoothest shot possible.
In addition, PSE’s revolutionary Carbon Air® has been given the Evolve®Cam System upgrade, with the Carbon Air® 32 ECS, and longer axle-to-axle Carbon Air® 34 also sporting the new cam system. So now the lightest bow on the market is also the most comfortable to shoot.

Archery dealers across the country have already received their first shipments of Evolve® and Carbon Air® ECS bows and are available for consumers to shoot today. According to PSE, we are all in for an unbelievable shooting experience
