PIKEVILLE, Ky. – Archery, one of the nation’s fastest growing collegiate sports, is coming to the University of Pikeville next fall and will be coached by Chicago, Ill., native Jon Woods.

Woods was introduced to the sport at a young age and has gone on to train USA Archery instructors and coach hundreds of archers in community park district programs that he created in the Chicago area.
“I am excited and grateful for the opportunity to be UPIKE’s first archery Coach.,” said Woods. “I want to thank the university’s administration for its support in allowing me to take on this new endeavor and for providing me with the leadership to build an excellent program.”

While Woods was first introduced to archery as a Boy Scout of America, his professional career began as a Recreation Coordinator for the Illinois Department of National Resources.

Woods was a multi-sport student-athlete in high school, participating in baseball, basketball, football, track & field and wrestling. He continued his collegiate career in football and track, earning a biology degree from Oberlin (Ohio) College and Master’s degree in Intercultural Service, Leadership and Organizational Leadership from World Learning SIT (Vermont) along the way.

“We’re excited about the addition of archery on campus next fall,” said UPIKE Athletic Director Robert Staggs. “It’s a great fit geographically and provides us with another excellent activity for our current and prospective students. Not only can students excel in archery while on campus, but it’s a lifelong sport that they can take with them long after earning their degrees.”

Archery, which will be co-ed, will become UPIKE’s 22nd varsity sport offering, joining eSports as the latest additions to the department since 2014. It also takes the place of women’s lacrosse, which was dropped last year.

UPIKE is set to become the sixth collegiate athletic department in Kentucky to sponsor archery as the sport continues to grow in the state after being added to the Kentucky High School Athletic Association’s offerings in 2012.

The Bears plan to join the United States Collegiate Archery Association where they will compete in regional and national championships in three divisions, including 3D, indoor and outdoor events.

Those interested in joining or learning more about UPIKE’s archery program can contact Coach Woods at jonwoods@upike.edu or (708) 309-0065.

Flushing, Michigan- Carbon Express, the Leader in arrow technology, is proud to announce that Pro Staff shooter Paige Pearce Gore has won the renowned National Field Archery Association’s Western Classic, May 6-8, 2016.
Attendance at this year’s Western Classic was at an all-time high with some 1,400 archers competing at this weekend event which, as always, was located in Redding, California.

This event drew competitors from many parts of the world, but one in attendance was right at home. Paige Pearce Gore lives in California and even though she didn’t need to take a plane to get to this competition you can be sure her heart is soaring w
th triumph after this competition.

Paige Pearce Gore was recently married and we would like to congratulate her, on not only winning a fantastic man, but also winning the Western Classic three years in a row; she has now added the 2016 win to her run. During this outdoor event shooters must hit 3 D targets that are up to 110 yards away. With such challenging targets you need a high performance arrow like the Nano Pro’s to “Pearce” the target.

On Friday May 6, the competitors shot at 25 3D targets, on Saturday they also shot at 25 3D targets and on the last day, Sunday, the competitors shot at 20 3D targets all of which are in varied terrain. Paige was skilled enough to not only be the top
scoring woman this year, but the past two years. Paige ended up facing some troubling weather conditions that can be hard to shoot well in. Despite the rain and her fierce competitors Pearce Gore managed to tie the course record, shooting a 1529! Carbon Express is proud to congratulate Paige on her record win.

Carbon express is committed to supporting all aspects of the archery field , from the novice hunter to the most accomplished world champion archers.Carbon Express, an Eastman Outdoors, Inc. brand, is the leader in high performance carbon hunting and target arrows and arrow components for hunters and target shooters.

The Easton Salt Lake Archery Center was awarded the “Best of 2016 in Salt Lake City” in the Archery Ranges category. This makes it 2 years in a row and has placed us in the Business Hall of Fame for Salt Lake City. We are very proud to accept this honor and will continue to keep the center at this level.

The center has been busy with site tours, birthday parties, scout groups, youth groups, members, and general public using both the indoor and outdoor ranges. We have had a wide variety of activities that have helped grow the sport of archery, which include; team-building activities for many organizations as well as private lessons, a winter league, and weekend practices for JOAD. We hosted the Beehive – Wasatch Bowhunters youth league, a spring fling shoot, try archery, and basic 2 and basic 3 classes. We anticipate an increase in the intermediate class coming from basic 2 and basic 3 shooters.

During January and February, a 3D league was held in our indoor range for HOYT and Easton. These shooters spent a few hours together each week and they were in charge of the set up and take down for the 6-week league. It was great to see everyone working together as they created the indoor 3D landscape as the animal targets were put into place throughout the range. In March we were pleased, once again, to have the opportunity to host the 2016 JOAD and Indoor Nationals. Hundreds of archers participated and the energy level was evident from the start. It was great to see our center full of competitive shooters and help them have an awesome experience. As the weekend event progressed the center transformed into a community of shooters, meeting new people and being reunited with friends and family. The judges and staff put in many hours and did a fantastic job in facilitating these events. The picture
s on our Facebook page have captured some great aspects of the national experience. Our Facebook page reaches so many people and is a true showcase for the versatility of the center.

Shortly after the National events, The Junior Dream Team set up shop for a week and had an enjoyable time being coached while utilizing our indoor range for shooting and working on balance. Many of the team used our workshop for their bows, and our high-speed camera for technique and shot analysis. As a result, each team member heightened their individual skills as they worked together as a team. As their camp concluded they were the first group to have fun with one of our latest acquisitions; an archery skeet machine. Not only did the JDT campers shoot flu-flu arrows at foam disks in the air, but the JDT coaches did as well. It was great to see the competitive nature of the coaches’ surface.

New landscapingLandscaping modifications are evolving at the center. We are eliminating all of the grass at the back of the property around the outdoor field and replacing it with turf that will extend to the west and east sides of the property. In the long run this will reduce the amount of money spent on watering costs, landscaping costs and controlling the mosquitos during the warm weather. We are also adding rock to the back berm and clearing out all the berms on the 3D range to create one big open space. This area will be used as the practice field during the World Cup and will open up more opportunities to hold larger outdoor tournaments. We will still be able to utilize the space for our 3D range and shoots. We now have the ability to create larger and different animal layout scenarios.

We are looking forward to opportunities to grow the sport of archery over the next few months and into the summer. Our center activities calendar is filling up and we look forward to playing archery tag as well as using our archery hover ball game and archery skeet machine.

Local NFAA clubs will work with the S3DA program to provide shooting venues, events and mentoring for S3DA students and families. The NFAA State Directors will also be working to bring more S3DA clubs to their respective states. Scholastic 3-D Archery will have a national indoor tournament in conjunction with the NFAA Indoor Nationals.

“Since the foundation of the NFAA, we have tried to be a leader in the promotion and preservation of competitive target archery,” says Bruce Cull, President of the National Field Archery Association. “We see that the youth of archery will be our future and have taken steps to encourage and support young archers, S3DA is the next step in promoting youth archery. As a grassroots organization S3DA has been exposing kids to real target archery and growing tremendously. We are very excited to partner with them to incorporate Indoor Target Archery to the S3DA organization.”

Jennie Richardson, Executive Director for Scholastic 3-D Archery states, “The NFAA is the standard in Indoor Target Archery here in the US. We are honored to have the NFAA partner with us to help students realize a new type of archery that previously was not available in the S3DA program. With this partnership, our students have the opportunity to compete in the same environment that archery professionals do. This is a giant step forward for S3DA, NFAA and youth archery.”

Started in December 2012 by the Scholastic Archery Association, S3DA has grown exponentially as a next step program to follow introductory programs offered as part of 4-H or the National Archery in Schools Program. S3DA addresses the need for a program to bridge beginning target archery experience and more advanced activities such as 3-D shooting and bowhunting. The program currently operates across the United States with hundreds of certified coaches serving thousands of young archers, grades 3–12.

If you have a child or beginner that you want to introduce to archery, consider taking them to try 3D archery. Rather than shooting standard targets at an open range, 3D archery adds excitement by emulating actual bowhunting. It’s easy to get carried away while skulking through the wilderness, looking to deliver that perfect shot on a realistic target!

3D archery has taken big steps lately. The Scholastic 3D Archery Association (S3DA) continues to expand since its creation in 2012. S3DA is currently active in 25 states, teaching thousands of kids from third grade through high school. These afterschool programs keep young archers active and entertained, while teaching them a skill they will value for the rest of their life.

If you asked a stranger if they wanted to play 3D archery, they would probably assume it’s a videogame. But they would be delightfully surprised by the truth.

3D archery provides a fun way to learn fundamental shooting techniques, and more importantly, safety, but it’s also a good way for seasoned bowhunters to stay sharp year round. Mathews recently released a short film called, “Training Ground”, which documents two bowhunting friends, Brett Seng and Cal Arnold, as they travel to Redding, California, to practice on a 3D course.

They discuss the importance of practice, explaining how a good hunter practices thoroughly so they can confidently shoot at a live animal when the moment comes. In their mind, it’s more important to understand your weaknesses than strengths, and realistic settings and targets help accomplish that. Seng and Cal also illustrate the immersive nature of 3D courses and how seriously they take it. Seng says, “We flew in here to California like we we’re going on a hunt. We rent an RV and we pack food like we’re going on a hunt. We park the truck like we’re going on a hunt. We woke up like we were going hunting. Except we’re walking out on a 3D course.” The course is used hone their skills and also meet fellow bowhunters and competitive archers.

Safety is still the number one priority on a 3D archery range. So follow the rules and stay on the proper trail.

Now although 3D archery is an amazing practice tool for beginners and seasoned hunters alike, it’s also important to note that it has become a competitive sport in its own right. The 3D Archery World Championships draw a bigger crowds year after year. The Scholastic 3D Archery Association is taking gradual steps to foster an early interest in the sport and then give kids a path for the future. Lately, the S3DA has partnered with colleges in order to provide scholarships for competitive 3D archers. In fact, they provided over $300,000 in scholarships in 2015 alone.

3D archery is to be positioned at the very center of the modern archery world. It fascinates young archers and teaches them the basics, helps active bowhunters immerse themselves in practice during the offseason, and can even provide scholarships and a career path into professional sports.
