I’ve bowhunted with previous Hoyt carbon bows. And although I’ve put more Hoyt aluminum-riser bows to work than I can recall, I’ve deemed Hoyt’s carbon bows among my annual favorites ever since the venerable manufacturer jumped into this program. The Carbon Defiant discussed here is a Michael Waddell Bone Collector Brotherhood Collector’s Edition, which is a black, crinkle-finished bow with a green/black bowstring, lime-green buss cables, Limb Shox and Shock-Rods, buck-skull logo grip and string stop.

The Carbon Defiant’s riser is centered around three Helical Flex Tune hollow carbon tubes, which maximize structural strength while reducing weight by 53 percent compared to solid tubes. The Carbon Defiant’s riser is built from more than 50 hand-laid parts, all assembled with exacting engineering to create a stiffness-to-weight ratio 11 times higher than comparable aluminum risers. These risers are so durable, that the Carbon Defiant—set at 80 pounds at 30 inches and producing over 104 foot-pounds of energy—also survived 1,500 dry-firing tests.

What sets the Carbon Defiant apart most as a hunting bow is its PerfectBalance Stabilization System and Offset Riser
Technology geometry. They combine to make the Carbon Defiant one of the best-balanced bows you’ll ever handle. The riser has an offset swerve, and the stainless steel stabilizer bushing is offset 0.75 inches outside center-shot (opposite the sight-mounting bracket) to deliver ideal balance.

Hoyt’s DFX Cam & ½ system offers many real-world advantages. First, the DFX is extremely efficient and highly forgiving, which was obvious during my tests. The Hoyt Carbon Defiant proceeded from heaviest to lightest arrows smoothly, with speeds increasing in the nearly linear fashion without a change in speed more than 1 fps in five shots, and most didn’t vary at all. The DFX’s hybrid cam maximizes the string angle at full draw, with the cams swinging out from the limb tips to increase the bow’s overall length when the shooter snugs into anchor.

The Carbon Defiant’s riser and past-parallel limbs also deliver inherent silence. The split limbs hold wedge-fit “radiated” Limb Shox, i.e., limbs anchored by streamlined, pivoting Defiant ProLock Pockets, each with three imbedded Shock-Rod Technology dampeners between limbs and riser. Hoyt’s Silent Shelf Technology, a rubber pad covering the arrow shelf, eliminates game-spooking arrow clicks while using many models of drop-away rests. It promotes consistent nock separation while also taming bowstring twang and eliminating the need for string silencers, which can reduce speeds.

Finally, Hoyt’s Zero Torque Cable Guard System includes a buss-cable roller system on a spring-loaded base that flexes inward at full draw to eliminate lateral torque and further increase accuracy and shooting ease. The Carbon Defiant is easy to tune and highly forgiving. It seems to shoot itself. It took me little time to assemble fist-sized groups out to 40 yards.

At a glance, Bear Moment mirrors last year’s BR 33 with the same cam system, similar geometry, and overall similar features. With closer inspection, Bear improved its already impressive speed without greatly affecting the shootability.

This compound includes an 80 percent let-off EAZ Hybrid Cam System which makes this bow extremely easy to pull and has no jarring bumps or surprising let-offs. In fact, the cam on this bow is so SMOOTH, that it can make a 70-pound draw seem like 60 pounds, as well as make early season, heavy draw weights bearable in bone-chilling weather with tense muscles. The newest version of the EAZ Cam System includes DRAW-DIAL Rotating Modules that allows fast and simple draw-length adjustments anywhere from 25-30 inches without sacrificing performance and accuracy at any draw length. Bear Archery Moment comes standard with dual string stops or optional ROCKSTOPS limb stops.

This bow comes equipped with a super-strong 7075 aircraft-grade aluminum riser designed to have a wider side profile. The 7075 aluminum material delivers a stiffer, vibration-free platform for increased accuracy and silent shooting. Bear’s new design on the riser set the handle closer to the bowstring to create a speedy 6-inch brace height. The NANOGRIP promises better shooting comfort, and improved bow-hand interface. The new grip on this compound reduces torque at full draw, and increases accuracy potential.

Bear Archery bows hold several unique, notable technologies that are included in =the design of this compound: the HingeGuard swiveling offset buss-cable guard to eliminate release twang; Bi-Dimensionally adjustable top and bottom SonicStop offset string suppressors with carbon rods held by adjustable clamps; SonicBonds silencing modules in the riser between the handle and each limb pocket, and inside the limb pockets; and finally, four rubber SonicKnots that give speed studs double duty as dampeners/ silencers. Because Bear compound bows come standard as a deadly silent weapon, there is no need to mess with any extraneous quieting accessories.

Bear Archery Moment proves undeniably speedy and accurate. Even with the heaviest arrow shafts, the Bear Moment had no problems breaking 300 fps, and with the lighter shafts this impressive bow reached speeds of 360 fps, 20 fps higher than the advertised ATA speed of 340 fps. This is an impressively fast, accurate, and smooth weapon that is incredibly silent straight out of the box.

The GearHead T24 Carbon Fiber Compound Bow is one of the most maneuverable bow chassis around, and at 3.1 pounds it’s certainly the most easily toted payload in archery. But most important, this compound shoots hunting arrows with authority. Those qualities make the T24 a serious hunting bow that’s ideal whether you’re confined to a whitetail treestand or pop-up blind, or hiking the rough- and tumble high-altitude haunts of big elk. In fact, the T24 and every other GearHead bow is small enough to stuff inside a daypack.

The T24’s riser is constructed of twin panels of quasi-isotropic carbon sheet and 36 layers of cross-pattern weave fiber, with both sides separated by four 2.5-inch aluminum pillars and dual-anchoring limb platforms of milled aluminum. The platforms anchor backset, offset split limbs and hold a “freefloating” independent grip and right-to-left convertible rest plate. The rest-mounting plate on the T24 also holds the cable-guard slide and string stop.

The GearHead T24’s dual-point limb-anchoring system aligns the limb pivot points perfectly with the grip, which creates forgiveness and more stability. The rest-mounting plate attaches to the grip/shelf area with three set screws, and converts in minutes without a bow press for right- or left-hand shooting. The T24’s dual-plate riser configuration creates a rigid cage that eliminates flex and vibrations during the shot. So, although the T24 appears radical beyond its short stature, it shoots like a conventional compound bow.

If anything on the T24 is truly radical it’s the unique two-track cam system, which consists of two symmetric, straight-take-up eccentrics that pull through lots of peak and drop into a high-percentile, adjustable let-off deep into the draw cycle. This slightly challenging draw pays off with impressive speeds for such a short bow, especially for a 29-inch draw. Most archers will find plenty of draw-length options between 25 and 29 inches. The T24’s cam system includes a dual-point, rubber-padded limb-stop system that creates a rock-solid back wall. GearHead also integrated string suppressors, and delivers consistent arrows speeds that boost accuracy.

The Carbon Fiber T24 has a string suppressor that also acts as an integrated armguard keeping bulky clothing out of the bowstring’s path. This compound is remarkably quiet out of the box, something whitetail hunters will appreciate. To achieve that trait, two of the riser’s cross-pillars hold BowJax “star” silencers, while the bowstring and buss cables hold four LimbSaver String Leeches, and the carbon cable guard and Teflon-lined cable slide include an integrated drop-away activation-cord tie-off loop.

Shooting the T24 was surprisingly pleasant, even addicting. It gives archers a feeling of control, possibly because it’s so stable and lightweight. GearHead limbs are 100 percent guaranteed for the first five years, and the riser and cams are guaranteed for the life of the original owner.
