Bowtech introduced its Stryker crossbow line nearly a decade ago. It produced a couple of top-end model crossbows, including the Solution LS and then Offspring. But as more companies and crossbows entered the market, Bowtech realized it needed to go beyond the Solution LS and Offspring. The Katana Series was introduced in 2015, and expanded in 2016 with the Katana 360.

The Katana is a 155-pound draw, 6.5-pound crossbow that measures 35 inches long by 23.25 inches cam to cam (19.25 inches when cocked), and features a compact 13-inch powerstroke that delivers blazing 385 fps speeds. It’s worth noting that the lighter version, the Katana 360, manages to reach 360 fps with only a 150-pound draw. Perhaps the Katana’s most identifiable feature is its large, skeletonized, polymer stock. Soft rubber panels are embedded in the grip and forend to give the crossbow a secure, supple feel. The buttstock is heavily skeletonized to reduce weight and its plastic comb is ambidextrous; it can be swapped via two small screws. The Katana also includes rigid safety wings above the forend guard against finger injuries.

Atop the polymer frame rides the Katana’s fire-control system, barrel and riser. The Katana’s light switch-style safety resides at the back of the receiver which has two advantages: one, the shooter can easily see and touch the safety’s position, and two, it’s naturally ambidextrous. Perhaps most notable about this crossbow’s safety is that it’s positive, tactile to the touch, and absolutely quiet.

Bowtech went above and beyond with its innovative uncocking ability. Stryker’s engineers let you uncock the Katana after disengaging its anti-dryfire device even after removing the arrow. Shooters disengage the anti-dryfire device by way of a spring-loaded lever on the back of the receiver (just above safety). To uncock the Katana, or the Katana 360, remove the arrow, attach the rope cocker, and pull it up with one hand to remove string tension on the trigger mechanism. Then use your other hand to pull the trigger. That causes the string to slide down to the anti-dryfire device, where it stays until you again pull up on the rope cocker to relieve string tension from the anti-dryfire device. Then, using your trigger hand, push on the uncocking mechanism while you ride the string down with your other arm. Atop the receiver is a metal bridge-type apparatus that houses the “Guardian” anti-dryfire device within, and a Picatinny rail on top for scope mounting. The bridge also contains the uncocking device beneath it.

The Katana’s barrel is made of precision-machined aluminum that boosts the unit’s tremendous accuracy. I shot 30-yard groups of 1.20 inches. A robust, machined-aluminum riser fastens onto the frame with two large bolts from beneath, rather than using one that screws down from the end like on most crossbows which increases the rigidity of the Katana’s riser and limb system.

The chronograph recorded an average speed of 385 fps. In fact, it’s so fast that when shooting it, I couldn’t see the arrow until it struck the target with 113 foot-pounds of deer-crushing whack. What’s miraculous, however, is that Stryker accomplishes this speed with a modest powerstroke. The Katana 360’s incredible speed and similar draw weight is an even greater testament to this. The Katana series is remarkably easy to cock with its pull rope. For those who need more leverage, a ratcheting C2 crank device—made by Stryker’s sister company Excalibur—dovetails onto the Katana’s stock. The Katana and Katana 360 are top-end crossbows that perform with the market’s best. They’re ambidextrous, easily cocked and powerful enough to take any big-game animal out to long ranges.

Bowtech now brings us the Reign 6 and 7 compound models. These designs combine all of Bowtech’s most notable technologies to create compound bows that are smooth, quiet, as well as more balanced and shooter-friendly. The Reign 6 has a 6-inch brace height and shoots 350 fps. The Reign 7 has a 7-inch brace and shoots 340 fps. This report discusses the more forgiving Reign 7. Bowtech annually introduces innovations that accelerate compound-bow design. This year, Bowtech has launched Outrigger off-set weight design, and PowerShift FlipDisk Technology. The Reign 6 and 7 has every aspect of Bowtech innovation that serious shooters crave, creating a “smarter bow” with improved accuracy and forgiveness.

The Reign’s new OverDrive Binary Cam is a symmetrical, synchronized system that unleashes some of the industry’s fastest arrows, which are also stable, accurate and tunable. The OverDrive Binary Cams include rotating modules that allow 6 inches of draw-length adjustments in a single bow, and without a bow press. The PowerShift FlipDisk Technology cam system simplifies previous models’ PowerShift Technology (now labeled PowerDisc3) by introducing simpler FlipDisc2 Technology. The FlipDisc2 system offers exactly that: “Performance” and “Comfort” settings only. It’s a streamlined, user-friendly design that offers plenty of arrow speed at each end and easy settings you tweak for personal preferences. The 10-position Micro Sync Dial lets you finely tune its eccentric synchronization should the buss cables stretch slightly after hundreds—or thousands—of shots.

The Reign 7 is not only a powerhouse, but it is also very well-balanced and torque-free. This bow lineup features incredible stability and balance that starts with a refined Center Pivot Extreme (CPX) riser. This torque-free riser precisely aligns the bowstring, and shifts the limb-pivot points rearward and in line with the grip for added forgiveness; this helps paralyze limb movements to tame vibrations and shot noise. This cutting-edge riser holds a FLX-Guard buss-cable carrier, a spring-loaded, bearing-equipped roller system that eliminates friction during the draw cycle and riser torque at full draw with zero lateral nock travel for greater accuracy. Bowtech’s released the new Outrigger counterweight system which are weights suspended in rubber inside a “revolver cylinder” on the riser’s bottom portion which are offset to the sight window’s side of the riser to counterbalance accessories. In addition to its advanced riser design and past-parallel limbs, the Reign 7 includes an adjustable string stop, and a riser dampener, buss-cable silencers, and suspended-weight damper on the FLX-Guard assembly.

The ability to choose a personal draw-cycle feel, which means “Comfort” for cold treestand vigils or “Performance” while running hot for bugling elk, is one of the useful technologies on this compound. The accuracy and confidence that the mirco-tuning the cam system delivers is very advanced and reliable. Further, a bow that spits arrows at 340 fps features such a buttery-smooth draw cycle is unbeatable. The Reign 7 is so stable, shock-free and well-balanced that it seems to practically shoot itself. And what bowhunter doesn’t love a quiet bow? The Reign 7 makes no compromises. It truly has it all.

Kitchener, Ontario, Canada – Excalibur’s Micro Suppressor, the brand’s 2017 flagship crossbow, is a revolution in size and sound. The crossbow is deadly quiet, the most compact Micro crossbow ever designed by the company, and still capable of firing bolts at speeds up to 355 fps.

“The Micro crossbow series has been incredibly popular with our customers for several years, and we know the Micro Suppressor is the best one yet,” said Michael Martin, marketing specialist for Excalibur Crossbow. “This crossbow has everything you want in a recurve: compact size, lightweight, high-performance and deadly quiet.”

Built on the Micro 355 platform, the Micro Supressor features the all-new Sound Deadening System, four components working in sync to dramatically reduce vibration and noise when the crossbow is fired. An over-moulded, rubberized stirrup, Ex-Shox, String Stars and R.A.V.S. silencers deliver a smoother, quieter shooting experience, which will lead to greater success in the field.

Also new on the Micro Suppressor is the comfortable and lightweight Bullpup Ready Rest Stock, which reduces the crossbow length by 2.5 inches compared to similar models. The stock comes complete with rubber grip inserts for ultimate control and feel.

Additional features include the Gen II CRT Limb System, the most compact and durable limbs available today, the Quad-Loc riser, Recoil Energy Dissipation System (R.E.D.S.) and Air Brakes limb suppressors.

If the compact and quiet Micro Suppressor isn’t impressive enough on its own, Excalibur has included a new X-Hanger quiver, made from lightweight carbon materials for versatility and maneuverability. The quiver attaches to the Micro Supressor via a Picatinny rail allowing for additional accessory attachments.

Also included with the Micro Suppressor are an ambidextrous cheekpiece, oversized finger guards and the Guardian Anti-Dry-Fire system for ultimate safety and protection. The crossbow comes equipped with a Tact-Zone Illuminated Scope, three Quill arrows, three 150-grain field points and a rope cocking aid.

The Micro Suppressor’s compact size and silent shot make it the most deadly crossbow on the market today. Available in Realtree Xtra® finish, the Micro Suppressor has a suggested retail price of $1,299.

SEE WHAT HAPPENS WHEN A CROSSBOW IS PUSHED TO DESTRUCTION

Kitchener, Ontario, Canada – Excalibur Crossbows, the world’s most trusted crossbow brand, will prove that claim with the Crossbow Destruction Challenge video series, launched to illustrate the incredible durability of the brand’s crossbows through a series of torture tests.

The 10-part video series will be featured on a dedicated landing page and through the brand’s social media accounts beginning July 18th. The Crossbow Destruction Challenge landing page will feature authentic product testimonials from Excalibur customers and an entry form for a chance to win a brand new Excalibur Micro 355.

“Excalibur Crossbow has set the standard for durability for more than 30 years, and our customers demand a product that is reliable in the field,” said Ryan Hawkins, Product Marketing Manager for Excalibur. “What better way to reinforce this message than to put the Excalibur’s through a series of torture tests to see if they will function properly and accurately.”

Dan Wallace of Huntin’ the Backwood’s TV joined Excalibur for the testing, which included a 4×4 running over the crossbow and dragging it down an airstrip runway behind a pickup truck. After each test, Wallace took the crossbow, loaded it and fired accurately at a nearby target.

Wallace is veteran of crossbow hunting and has been a shooter of Excalibur crossbows for more than 15 years.

“You won’t see this kind of campaign from other crossbow companies for one good reason: their bows would fail,” Wallace said. “With the Destruction Challenge, we put these Excalibur crossbows through some significant stress to see how they would perform. If these bows could withstand the torture we put them through, then anything that would happen in the course of normal, careful operation would be a walk in the park.”

A huge crowd gathered at the Las Vegas Festival Grounds to watch the two teams put their archery skills to the test by going head to head in a unique tic-tac-toe archery challenge.
