In November of 2015, National NASP® leadership and a group of NASP® educators and students met to discuss ways to further enhance the program. One recommendation was to establish a uniform incentive and recognition format to recognize and promote academic achievement for participating NASP® students. The concept of a NASP® Academic Archer was born.

In its first year of implementation, Academic Archer finished with 8,517 students enrolled. Educators from 38 US states and two Canadian Provinces implemented the NASP® Academic Archer Program with their students. Easton Technical Products became the Title sponsor of the program and recently demonstrated their full commitment to recognizing academic excellence in their decision to recognize the top Academic Archers at the upcoming NASP® National tournament. Now in its second year, the academic recognition program has far exceeded expectations for enrollment in states and jurisdictions across the globe as this year, Academic Archer included students from 45 states, provinces and countries.

NASP motivates students to work harder in the classroom! In an ongoing National NASP student survey, 42% of them have said so, and 63% of those same students indicated that NASP makes them feel more connected with their school. Easton Technical Products (ETP) is not only paying attention, but will now recognize academically successful students at the National NASP tournament. Easton Technical Products is a Gold Medal Level Sponsor of the National Archery in the Schools Program and the Title sponsor of the NASP Academic Archer program. ETP has now elected to recognize the top scoring Academic Archers competing in the 2017 NASP National Tournament in Louisville, KY on May 11- 13, 2017.

Archers in each of the three divisions – elementary, middle school and high school. Each prize package will include Easton arrows, Easton accessories, a Delta McKenzie Target and a Hoyt bow of their choice.

The center has been busy with site tours, birthday parties, scout groups, youth groups, members, and general public using both the indoor and outdoor ranges. We have had a wide variety of activities that have helped grow the sport of archery, which include; team-building activities for many organizations as well as private lessons, a winter league, and weekend practices for JOAD. We hosted the Beehive – Wasatch Bowhunters youth league, a spring fling shoot, try archery, and basic 2 and basic 3 classes. We anticipate an increase in the intermediate class coming from basic 2 and basic 3 shooters.

During January and February, a 3D league was held in our indoor range for HOYT and Easton. These shooters spent a few hours together each week and they were in charge of the set up and take down for the 6-week league. It was great to see everyone working together as they created the indoor 3D landscape as the animal targets were put into place throughout the range. In March we were pleased, once again, to have the opportunity to host the 2016 JOAD and Indoor Nationals. Hundreds of archers participated and the energy level was evident from the start. It was great to see our center full of competitive shooters and help them have an awesome experience. As the weekend event progressed the center transformed into a community of shooters, meeting new people and being reunited with friends and family. The judges and staff put in many hours and did a fantastic job in facilitating these events. The picture
s on our Facebook page have captured some great aspects of the national experience. Our Facebook page reaches so many people and is a true showcase for the versatility of the center.

Shortly after the National events, The Junior Dream Team set up shop for a week and had an enjoyable time being coached while utilizing our indoor range for shooting and working on balance. Many of the team used our workshop for their bows, and our high-speed camera for technique and shot analysis. As a result, each team member heightened their individual skills as they worked together as a team. As their camp concluded they were the first group to have fun with one of our latest acquisitions; an archery skeet machine. Not only did the JDT campers shoot flu-flu arrows at foam disks in the air, but the JDT coaches did as well. It was great to see the competitive nature of the coaches’ surface.

New landscapingLandscaping modifications are evolving at the center. We are eliminating all of the grass at the back of the property around the outdoor field and replacing it with turf that will extend to the west and east sides of the property. In the long run this will reduce the amount of money spent on watering costs, landscaping costs and controlling the mosquitos during the warm weather. We are also adding rock to the back berm and clearing out all the berms on the 3D range to create one big open space. This area will be used as the practice field during the World Cup and will open up more opportunities to hold larger outdoor tournaments. We will still be able to utilize the space for our 3D range and shoots. We now have the ability to create larger and different animal layout scenarios.

We are looking forward to opportunities to grow the sport of archery over the next few months and into the summer. Our center activities calendar is filling up and we look forward to playing archery tag as well as using our archery hover ball game and archery skeet machine.

The U.S. Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, California was expanded with a new state-of-the-art archery center on October 22, thanks to lifelong archery supporter Jim Easton. Gifted and operated by the Easton Foundations, this expansion adds 42,629 square feet to the current U.S. Olympic Training Center.

“USA Archery is excited about the opening of the Easton Center of Excellence,” said Denise Parker, USA Archery CEO. “This project has been Jim Easton’s dream for many years, and we’re excited to see it come to fruition. Thanks to the Easton family’s generosity, it will be the world’s finest, most state-of-the-art archery training facility. Athletes lucky enough to live and train there will have the best resources possible, while being wrapped in its inspiring architecture and design.”

In proper archery fashion, the ribbon was cut with bows and arrows by a collection of U.S. Olympians. The grand opening also marked the 80^th birthday of Jim Easton.

“Part of my vision to support the development of sports education and programs for youth and aspiring Olympians and Paralympians has included designing, building and supporting archery training facilities,” said Jim Easton, son of Doug Easton and current CEO of Jas. D. Easton Inc. “The Easton Archery Center of Excellence is the culmination of years of planning and hard work by a team devoted to the goal of providing leadership, facilities, programs, training and education for the growth and development of archery, an unmatched experience for Olympic and Paralympic archery hopefuls, and a legacy (that) allows archers from around the world to pursue their competitive dreams.”

The facility was designed by Bob Easton, Jim’s brother and a champion archer. It incorporates classrooms, conference rooms, a fitness room, an athletes’ lounge, coaches’ offices, plus two 90-meter outdoor ranges and a 70-meter indoor range to accommodate every archer’s needs.

“This is a great stepping stone for a new stage of the Olympic movement of USA Archery,” said national head coach KiSik Lee in an interview with USA Archery. “We have the best facility in the world that would not only inspire athletes, but make them more proud to be part of Team USA.”
