West Henrietta, NY – Winner’s Choice Custom Bowstrings shooter Kris Schaff has taken home first place in the National Field Archery Association Dakota Classic held at NFAA Headquarters in Yankton, South Dakota.

Kris sported a Sunset Pink Elite Revol with teal Winner’s Choice Strings. The beginning of the event proved to be challenging as Kris found himself tied for 6th place behind some legendary shooters. However, Kris persevered and shot a consistent score in head to head matches of 148/150 to win 4 shootoffs in a row, landing him in the finals. The last few arrows secured Kris’s spot on the top of the podium as he beat his competitor 149-147, crowning him champion of the NFAA Dakota Classic.

“Winner’s Choice Bowstrings are the most consistent strings made,” said Schaff. “From shooting in 0 degrees at home in Montana or the humid 90 degrees in Florida, I’m confident they will perform flawlessly no matter where I am.”

Kris is looking forward to this weekend’s Western Classic Trail Shoot and the 2nd Leg of Outdoor Team Trials where he hopes to secure a spot for Team USA.

The 50th annual Vegas Shoot just wrapped up and it set the bar for attendance, with over 3,000 shooters from across the globe. Three tense days of shooting yielded some interesting results. The most interesting perhaps being that this year saw a remarkably low number of perfect scores, possibly due to the stress caused by a massive payout of $50,000 and a huge, enthusiastic crowd.

On day 1 alone only 38 archers ended with perfect scores, as compared to 49 in 2015, 46 in 2014, and 42 in 2013. As the weekend progressed the numbers continued to drop until only 5 shooters remained.

This year the 900 Club comprised of: Chance Beaubouef, Justin Hannah, Logan Wilde, Reza Zamaninejad and George Ryals. They were also joined by Sergio Pagni, the ‘lucky dog’ shooter who scored an almost perfect 899.

The 50th Vegas Shoot was given another moment for the record books as ‘lucky dog’ Sergio Pagni beat out the 5 previously-perfect shooters for the championship, marking the first time in the Vegas Shoot’s entire history that a ‘lucky dog’ won the competition.

“Lucky dog” Sergio Pagni – Photo Credit: World Archery

On the women’s side of the freestyle finals there were three archers that remained: Inge van Caspel, who came all the way from the Netherlands, and American archers Sarah Lance and Christie Colin. Ultimately Inge van Caspel won with a score of 29, the other two scoring 28 and 27.

Local NFAA clubs will work with the S3DA program to provide shooting venues, events and mentoring for S3DA students and families. The NFAA State Directors will also be working to bring more S3DA clubs to their respective states. Scholastic 3-D Archery will have a national indoor tournament in conjunction with the NFAA Indoor Nationals.

“Since the foundation of the NFAA, we have tried to be a leader in the promotion and preservation of competitive target archery,” says Bruce Cull, President of the National Field Archery Association. “We see that the youth of archery will be our future and have taken steps to encourage and support young archers, S3DA is the next step in promoting youth archery. As a grassroots organization S3DA has been exposing kids to real target archery and growing tremendously. We are very excited to partner with them to incorporate Indoor Target Archery to the S3DA organization.”

Jennie Richardson, Executive Director for Scholastic 3-D Archery states, “The NFAA is the standard in Indoor Target Archery here in the US. We are honored to have the NFAA partner with us to help students realize a new type of archery that previously was not available in the S3DA program. With this partnership, our students have the opportunity to compete in the same environment that archery professionals do. This is a giant step forward for S3DA, NFAA and youth archery.”

Started in December 2012 by the Scholastic Archery Association, S3DA has grown exponentially as a next step program to follow introductory programs offered as part of 4-H or the National Archery in Schools Program. S3DA addresses the need for a program to bridge beginning target archery experience and more advanced activities such as 3-D shooting and bowhunting. The program currently operates across the United States with hundreds of certified coaches serving thousands of young archers, grades 3–12.
