September is the month that most hunters—particularly bowhunters—start heading back to the woods to cut trails and hang stands in preparation for upcoming hunting season making it an opportune time to raise awareness about stand safety.

Use of tree stands is a safe and productive way to hunt if the hunter follows the manufacturer’s guidelines. However, falls from tree stands remain the #1 cause of injury and death for deer hunters. Tree Stand Safety Awareness Foundation (TSSA) strives to ensure that every hunter comes home safe to their family and friends. To accomplish this, let’s get the season started by putting safety first.

TSSA has designed an educational campaign called the “ABC’s of Tree Stand Safety” to serve as the building blocks to the awareness campaign.

Always remove and inspect your equipment

Buckle on your full-body harness

Connect to the tree before your feet leave the ground

By performing these 3 simple steps, tree stand users can virtually eliminate their risk of falling to the ground as the majority of falls occur outside the stand. TSSA encourages all hunters to take tree stand safety seriously, every time you hunt from, hang, or remove a tree stand.

Hunters and members of the industry alike can help spread the message of TSSA Foundation. Visit the TSSA website at www.treestandsafetyawareness.org or on social media at www.facebook.com/TreeStandSafetyAwareness or www.twitter.com@TreeStandSafety .

TSSA Foundation is a grassroots 501(c)(3) organization that serves as the industry resource with its sole focus on significantly reducing treestand accidents through promotion, education and best practices.
The Tree Stand Safety Awareness Organization (TSSA) held its inaugural meeting this past week and is pleased to announce that it has appointed Glen Mayhew as its first Executive Director. Dr. Mayhew serves as the Associate Dean of Jefferson College of Health Sciences in Roanoke, Virginia, is a member of the Virginia Tree Stand Safety Team and has been actively engaged in tree stand safety research. He will be responsible for day-to-day operations of the organization.

“Glen is the right person for the job. His level of passion, skills and enthusiasm for promoting tree stand safety was exactly what we were looking for,” according to Jerry Wydner, President and Chief Operating Officer of Hunter Safety System.”

During the meeting the group developed strategies for organizing as a national non-profit organization including initial development of its Board of Directors and potential avenues for raising awareness about tree stand safety. TSSA’s mission is to significantly reduce tree stand incidents through promotion, education, and best practices.

Tree stand accidents are the #1 contributor to injuries and fatalities for deer hunters across most states. Yet 99% of these incidents can be prevented.
