Standing on the line with a 134-135 score on the board and one arrow to go, two of the most experienced archers in the circuit, Gellenthien and Italy’s Sergio Pagni were head to head with the bronze medal just a shot away. Gellenthien was down two after the first six arrows, but came back to a tie and then took a one-point lead headed into the last end. Pagni, down, shot first; ten. The pressure was on, Gellenthien needed a 10 to win, a 9 to force a shoot off. He loosed a ten, solidly in the middle ring for the bronze victory.

On the path to the gold final, Anderson, who was ranked second, faced two of his U.S. teammates and just consistently posted incredibly high scores to continue advancing. He shared on social media: “Shooting for individual and team gold in Antalya! 150-148-149-148 through my four matches,” indicating his near perfect scores, “with some of my best X counts along the way. The Prevail pounds. The boys in Red, White and Blue did good work today, unfortunately we were all on the same side of the bracket. Reo, Braden and I shot awesome all day, and I honestly feel like we were the best three on the field. Brackets never seem to shake out the way they should, but that’s part of the game.”

In the gold final with Taipei’s Hsiang-Hsuan Chen, the scores started a bit lower than the previous day; both opened with 28s. Chen followed that with a perfect 30 while Anderson posted a 27 with an arrow in the 8 ring. Taking the gap down to two points in the next three arrows, Anderson drilled a 29 to Chen’s 28. As the two split the next end with 29s, Anderson opened the final three arrows with a 9. He came back with an X as Chen nailed two in the X and then Chen clinched the win as both scored 9s for a final tally of 144-141.

The men’s team of Anderson, Gellenthien and Reo Wilde (Pocatello, Idaho) faced Denmark for the gold earlier in the day. The two teams have faced each other many times in recent competitions and have begun a friendly rivalry, so there was much excitement headed into the match. Denmark had a single point lead after the first end, but after joking in between rounds, the U.S. men came back strong with a 59 to turn the tides and take the lead to their side. After a 57 for the U.S. and a 58 for Denmark, the teams entered the final six arrows in a stalemate, but Denmark’s 59 bested the U.S.’s 56 to take the gold win.

Competition resumes tomorrow with recurve finals where Brady Ellison (Globe, Arizona) will be shooting for individual gold and mixed team bronze with young teammate Anna Miscione (Ramona, California).
In November of 2015, National NASP® leadership and a group of NASP® educators and students met to discuss ways to further enhance the 15 year old program. One recommendation was to establish a uniform incentive and recognition format to recognize and promote academic achievement for participating NASP® students.

The concept of a NASP® Academic Archer was born. In its first year of implementation, AA finished with 8,517 students enrolled. Educators from 38 US states and two Canadian Provinces implemented the NASP® Academic Archer Program with their students. Easton Technical Products, a long time supporter and manufacturer of the only approved NASP® arrow, began discussions with NASP® leadership about the success of the program. Easton quickly recognized the value of the AA recognition program and gladly jumped on board as its financial sponsor.

Now in its second year, the academic recognition program has currently reached over 10,000 students in 39 jurisdictions for their success in the classroom and enrollments continue through April 30th.

Roy Grimes, president of NASP® said, “We are so pleased that schools and educators continue to see NASP® as a tool to motivate their kids through AA. We are certainly excited, along with our partner, Easton Technical Products to be able to recognize our students with this type of recognition.

Dr. Tommy Floyd, NASP® Vice President and General Manager was elated that the numbers for AA have continued to climb. “Educators tell us that AA is a tool for them to motivate their student archers to succeed in the classroom. We are especially excited about those students that have to work just a little harder to qualify as an Academic Archer – In doing so, NASP® is indeed achieving one of its long-standing goals of helping to motivate students for success in the classroom. ”

“Our next step with Academic Archer will be to help provide messaging to all NASP® participants on the importance of being prepared for College and Career. While our students continue to remind us that they want to know about archery opportunities beyond NASP®, we want them all to be thinking about the appropriate steps that each of them need to take to be ready for life after high school, life after NASP®.”

For more information on beginning the Academic Archer in your school: Please visit the toolkit at: http://naspschools.org/instructors/

It is our hope that every NASP® jurisdiction will enroll students in AA. We’d like to see the AA numbers top 50,000 students someday.
It is our intention to increasingly send the strongest of messages about how teaching archery as part of the in-school curriculum can be important to the mission of educators. We believe that the more we emphasize in-school archery as an extension of the classroom, the more that educators can use programs like AA, and the greater likelihood that NASP® will be around to motivate countless generations of young students!”

PIKEVILLE, Ky. – Archery, one of the nation’s fastest growing collegiate sports, is coming to the University of Pikeville next fall and will be coached by Chicago, Ill., native Jon Woods.

Woods was introduced to the sport at a young age and has gone on to train USA Archery instructors and coach hundreds of archers in community park district programs that he created in the Chicago area.
“I am excited and grateful for the opportunity to be UPIKE’s first archery Coach.,” said Woods. “I want to thank the university’s administration for its support in allowing me to take on this new endeavor and for providing me with the leadership to build an excellent program.”

While Woods was first introduced to archery as a Boy Scout of America, his professional career began as a Recreation Coordinator for the Illinois Department of National Resources.

Woods was a multi-sport student-athlete in high school, participating in baseball, basketball, football, track & field and wrestling. He continued his collegiate career in football and track, earning a biology degree from Oberlin (Ohio) College and Master’s degree in Intercultural Service, Leadership and Organizational Leadership from World Learning SIT (Vermont) along the way.

“We’re excited about the addition of archery on campus next fall,” said UPIKE Athletic Director Robert Staggs. “It’s a great fit geographically and provides us with another excellent activity for our current and prospective students. Not only can students excel in archery while on campus, but it’s a lifelong sport that they can take with them long after earning their degrees.”

Archery, which will be co-ed, will become UPIKE’s 22nd varsity sport offering, joining eSports as the latest additions to the department since 2014. It also takes the place of women’s lacrosse, which was dropped last year.

UPIKE is set to become the sixth collegiate athletic department in Kentucky to sponsor archery as the sport continues to grow in the state after being added to the Kentucky High School Athletic Association’s offerings in 2012.

The Bears plan to join the United States Collegiate Archery Association where they will compete in regional and national championships in three divisions, including 3D, indoor and outdoor events.

Those interested in joining or learning more about UPIKE’s archery program can contact Coach Woods at jonwoods@upike.edu or (708) 309-0065.

After a huge success in 2016, NASP® announces the opening of The 2017 On Target For Life Awards. The OTFLA program is intended to recognize and celebrate the many instances where in-school archery, and the people involved with it, are positively impacting the lives of 2.4 million NASP® student archers each year.

Since its inception in 2002, NASP® has continued to hear powerful examples of how in-school archery has positively impacted the lives of students and adults. The OTFLA program is intended to capture examples of the “best” of what NASP® is doing in 47 states and 11 jurisdictions with both team and individual awards.

In November of 2015, National NASP® leadership and a group of NASP® educators/coaches and students met to discuss ways to further enhance the 16 year old program. A system of recognitions and awards to capture the many “positives” that go on behind the scenes of NASP® was recommended. As a result, the following awards and recognitions will be recognized at the 2016 National NASP® tournament:

The Community Service Award is a team award that will go to a NASP® team that makes a substantial positive impact to its community. Evidence should be provided to clearly illustrate where NASP® students and coaches decided, as a team, to voluntarily make an outstanding positive difference for those around them. Community members that can confirm the community impact should be involved in the nomination, and the school administration should also be included.

The Bullseye Award is an individual award for a NASP® Student that has made notable positive strides in academic performance and behavior through their involvement with the program. As the name implies, this student is an example of the positive turnaround impact that survey data continues to imply for NASP® participants. This student, through their positive attributes and participation in NASP®, is now recognized as an ambassador for the NASP® program and their school community. Nomination should include the school principal.

The Superhero Award is an individual award intended to recognize an unpaid volunteer that makes an outstanding positive impact on their NASP® program or team. This award, recommended by the NASP® advisory students, is a way to capture the immeasurable positive impact of the many NASP® volunteers that support students in the program. Evidence should include examples of how the “Superhero” goes above and beyond in their support of their NASP® students.

The Courage Award is an individual award for a NASP® student that has overcome a major life event or disability, yet continues to inspire others through their participation in NASP®. They are an ambassador for NASP® and for what participation in it, represents for them. This is a student that continues to lead, inspire and provide hope to others as a NASP® student.

The Outstanding Alumni Award is an individual award for a former NASP® graduate that experienced the positives of NASP®, and now continues to give back to their former school or team. They provide obvious service, support and/or a positive role model for current NASP® students to emulate. Clear evidence should be provided to explain how this individual is obviously supporting their previous NASP® program by “paying it forward.” Examples of how this individual has supported the program are pivotal in the decision making for this award.

Coach of the Year Award is an individual award for a NASP® educator/coach. The educator/coach must be nominated by at least the majority of the NASP® students of his/her team or class. The award must have the support and co-nomination of the school administration. This award is not dependent on success or even participation in current NASP® tournament structure. The nominee must have a proven history of making an overwhelming positive difference in the lives of participating NASP® students. This is a student-nominated award specifically recognizing attributes of the coach beyond just their ability to teach the fundamentals of archery. Specific examples of how the coach has gone above and beyond in the lives of their NASP® students is pivotal in the decision making for this award.

NASP® On Target for Life Award Nomination instructions

To nominate an individual or a team for a particular OTFLA, go to http://app.naspschools.org/ontarget/

Please note, NASP® will need written permission from each finalist to share his or her story via media outlets.

Today he broke his own record and earned his fourth Archery World Cup Final Champion title. Ellison also earned his fourth Longines Prize for Precision award keeping his hold on the prestigious honor that has only been available to win four times.

Today’s gold final was an opponent rematch of the Rio 2016 Olympic archery bronze match between Ellison and the Netherlands’ Sjef Van Den Berg. Van den Berg reported that he was still disappointed about his fourth place finish in Rio behind Ellison’s bronze medal win. Ellison opened the match with a strong first two sets to take the lead 4-0. Then Van Den Berg came back to bring the match to a 4-4 tie. In the last arrow Van Den Berg needed a nine to secure the win; he shot an eight. Ellison, who has won 64% of his tie-breaker shoot offs, shot a nine. Van Den Berg responded with another eight and gave Ellison the win.

USA’s Zach Garrett (Wellington, Missouri) made his World Cup Final debut earlier, just one month after his Olympic Games debut in Rio. At one point this summer Garrett was ranked third in the world, and coming into competition today he was seeded 6th. Facing Chinese Taipei’s Chun-Heng Wei, Garrett had a tough opponent. Wei took the match in three straight sets to advance. Wei then met Ellison in the semifinals, where Ellison took the win 6-2 to shoot for the gold. Korea’s Olympic Champion Ku then defeated Wei again for the bronze.

In addition to the World Cup Final title, Ellison also earned his fourth Longines Prize. Longines introduced the Prize for Precision in 2010 to celebrate the most accurate archers across of the year. The male and female archer with the highest number of 10s through ranking round and elimination matches, accumulated at all stages and the Final of the Archery World Cup, are awarded the prize. Recurve archers are eligible for the award in even years and compound archers in odd years, so out of the four possible years for recurve, Ellison has won all four times.

“I really like the Longines Prize for Precision for a couple of reasons,” Ellison told World Archery. “One, I’m the only person that wins it, so I really like that; that I’ve been that fortunate. I do like that it’s a good showing for consistency over the whole season. You may not be winning tournaments but you are shooting well enough to be in the top. I think that’s cool. I like getting a watch. It gives you extra incentive to do something besides win a tournament.”

On winning his fourth World Cup Final title, Ellison added: “It means a lot. It’s my fourth World Cup Final championship. [Colombia’s] Sara Lopez was getting close, but winning it this time and pushing it a little farther out of reach, feels good. It caps a pretty good year. I won the indoor World Cup final, individual Olympic medal, bronze at the world championships, and now this.” Up next for Ellison: World Archery Field Championships in Dublin, Ireland begin tomorrow.

In a tough quarterfinal match, Shelby dropped a three-point lead to a two-point deficit in the fourth end with two arrows in the seven-ring. His opponent, Brazil’s Andrey de Castro, who had just upset No. 4 seed and fan favorite USA’s Matt Stutzman (Fairfield, Iowa) in the previous round then dropped five points in the final three arrows leaving the door open for Shelby to come back and take the win.

His semifinal match against eventual bronze medal winner Jonathan Milne of Australia also started with an early lead, dropped to a one-point deficit in the third end, and then came back to take the win again, by just a single point. In the gold final, Shelby opened behind Italy’s Alberto Simonelli, but brought the score to a tie half way through the match. Closing out with two 29s, Shelby clinched the win 144-143.

Stutzman and Kevin Polish (Carmichaels, Pennsylvania) were two of the top four seeded archers from qualification and heavy favorites for medals. However, Polish, like Stutzman, faced an early upset in the 1/8th elimination. Stutzman, who won silver in London, shared: “Days like today, they happen.” Stutzman had held the lead since the second end through to the final three arrows, but de Castro posted a perfect 30 to Stutzman’s 27 to take the win by just one point 142-141. Polish fell 139-133 to Great Britain’s Michael Hall in the same round.

Stutzman already has his eyes on the future and the next four years. “Whether I win or lose, I’m leaving a legacy for people to watch,” Stutzman told World Archery. “Look at that guy, he has no arms, and he’s shooting. He didn’t let having no arms stand in the way of doing something he wanted to do, and for me that’s what’s important, changing just one person’s life.”

Four U.S. archers made it into the top eight in their divisions, and at one point all three compound open men held onto the top three spots, taking turns sitting in first place for much of the day. The U.S. is poised well going into medal matches beginning tomorrow.

Kevin Polish (Carmichaels, Pennsylvania) – the lifelong archer who only just discovered Paralympic archery and took up competition in USA Archery just in time for Trials to make the team – shocked the world, finishing second in the compound open men’s rankings with a 685. Just behind Kevin with 684 is Matt Stutzman, reigning Paralympic silver medalist, who ranked 4th after a challenging second half. Andre Shelby (Jacksonville, Florida) also faced a challenging second half and qualified 12th.

Samantha Tucker (Nampa, Idaho) qualified 17th and together with Polish ranked 9th for the mixed team competition. Tucker attributed windy conditions as a troubling factor on social media. Reigning W1 Paralympic Champion Jeff Fabry (Leemore, California) agreed: “The wind was just enough to make you cross-eyed!”

Fabry and Lia Coryell (LaCrosse, Wisconsin) scored high enough to qualify 3rd for the mixed team competition and 11th and 7th respectively in the individual brackets. Coryell’s score was a personal best at the best time to be in peak form.

World Champion Eric Bennett (Surprise, Arizona) qualified 7th for the recurve open men, one spot higher than his qualification placement from the World Championships last year. He shared: “I didn’t shoot my best today but overall I am pleased to be in the top 8. Conditions were great and there were some good scores shot. I’m looking forward to eliminations on Tuesday and the chance to try and shoot for a medal.”

Michael Lukow (Salt Lake City, Utah), who qualified 23rd behind Bennett, commented: “Not my best day’s work but it was a good day to shoot. I have high hopes for elimination and will shoot well. Ranking was good and the gentlemen I shared a target with were wonderful to shoot with. The organizers ran it all very well.”
