By Rachael Reginek-Krenz

What better way to hunt down or lure your prey than by deceiving your game’s sense of smell? We currently have the intelligence and technology to allow hunters to cover alarming scents and even lure trophy game straight to you. Most animals hunted have a sense of smell that is crucial to their survival; therefore it is very sensitive. If anything is altered in their environment that seems abnormal, instinct will spook the game away. There are many different approaches and products on the market that can make the difference in your future hunts.

Ozonics:

A top-of-the-line scent control and eliminating device is the Ozonics HR 300. It exterminates human odor to prevent spooking game. Due to its quiet operation, you’re able to bring this anywhere in the field without having to worry about noise. The integrated pulse technology balances time and oxidant concentration to maintain a consistent output rate, never discharging too much or too little ozone. This product is designed to be easily operated, and can be used with gloves on and/or in the dark. It has EZ mount technology for quick and quiet mounting, and an improved Smart Battery designed for optimal per-session performance. The included Smart Charger maintains the battery capacity for an extended period of time and prolongs the batteries’ life.

The Kinetic Back Pack made by Ozonics is specially designed to lock in odors unfamiliar to wildlife. This durable backpack has padded shoulder straps, quiet dual zippers, and large finger pulls for easy use with gloves. For added convenience, this pack detaches at the top for the moments you only need scent elimination without the extra weight. Not only is there 1300 cubic inches of capacity, but it also includes two lower compression straps used for extra tag-along-items such as jackets, tri-pods, etc., and a compartment specially made for the Ozonics unit for some of the most effective odor elimination there is.

The Dominant Buck Bomb from Wildgame Innovations uses urine from mature bucks to lure rutting bucks with aggression instead of lust. It can be sprayed in bursts to create mock scrapes, enhance existing scrapes, or add aromatic realism to buck decoys. It can also be set to deploy all at once to create a strong downwind scent trail. The Dominant Buck Bomb is also UV-enhanced with Glo-Cote. This ultraviolet additive creates a visual lure that deer can see in daylight or darkness.

ScentBlocker:

The new DUI scent spray by Scentblocker has a dual-action formula that attracts and relaxes big game with an alluring cherry-vanilla scent. This formula contains an organic root additive that intoxicates game and draws them in; this effect is almost habitual. The potent vapor relaxes deer so they don’t mind suspicious odors, and it actually extends the time that deer spend at feed sites or food plots, allowing for more time to get that perfect shot. It can also entices nocturnal deer to become more daylight driven.

If you’re not interested in using sprays, another route is the Deodarant Pill by Scent Blocker. It effectively controls human scent with odor-neutralizing copper chlorophyllin. It also contains a high potency of parsley and alfalfa concentrate to help control mouth odors. This is a great internal route if your concern is bodily odor.

This pack includes 6-ounce bottle of Field Spray, 2.25-ounce deodorant stick, 16-ounce bottle of shampoo and body wash, and a 16-ounce bottle of laundry detergent. Eliminate your game’s sense of smell with nose jammer’s concentrated vanillin, as well as other natural compounds that hide your body odor and other foreign smells that scare off game. Their products are specifically formulated for North American woodland hunting; the smell is familiar to other animals and destroys other smells. The scent emitted from these products are naturally occurring scents that radiate off tress, plants and other things in the forest. Four layers of Nose Jammers Products are recommended to trick the senses of possible game by overloading their olfactory gland with a familiar, concentrated scent.

These opportunities are always amazing for outdoor writers because it gives us the chance to meet face to face with the experts and specialists behind some of the industry’s most cutting edge products. This intimate gathering provided an amazing setting to ask questions, test gear, and learn firsthand about the inspiration behind it all.

Don’t get frightened, this cat in the Hoyt factory front lobby has already been arrowed and stuffed.

The Inside Archery and Bowhunt America team meet with some of Hoyt’s key team members. From left, Daniel Allred, Mike Luper, Sherry Krenz, Randy Walk, Steve Mack, Jeremy Eldredge and Travis Reginek.

In a stroke of good luck and expert planning, both the Easton and Hoyt manufacturing facilities were a stone’s throw away from the Easton Salt Lake City Archery Center, providing us with the opportunity to tour the factories. It was truly amazing to see all the hard work and technology behind the products from these facilities. We often take the polished, finished result for granted. Seeing the dedication and processes behind it all shed a new light on these two great companies.

Amazingly, Media Direct’s Mark Sidelinger and Kim Cahalan also managed to bring a great deal of fun to the table in addition to the in-depth learning experience. The first night of the event was marked with a game of ‘archery tag’. This new sport has been making a lot of waves and is steadily growing in popularity. Outdoor writers and manufactures split into random teams, got geared up, and went at it in a battle of tactics, precision and teamwork. On day two, after meeting with manufacturers and touring Easton and Hoyt, our group had the pleasure of receiving recurve lessons from none other than Olympic gold medalist Jay Barrs. We then put our newly polished skills to the test on Easton Salt Lake City Archery Center outdoor range in a head to head shooting competition. Finally, we rounded out the gathering with a clay-pigeon style areal shooting practice.

Wildlife Research joins a growing list of companies that have stepped up to help S3DA grow archery and bowhunter numbers.

“We are thrilled to support a great organization such as S3DA” says Sam Burgeson, President of Wildlife Research Center, “They do a tremendo job educating our youth in a sport they can enjoy a lifetime.”

“Wildlife Research Center is a new partner that I am particularly excited about because of the personal support I have received from them during my professional career,” says Jennie Richardson, Executive Director of S3DA. “Our research has proven that students who participate in S3DA want to bowhunt and take the appropriate steps to beginning that lifelong passion.
Get the drop on big game by adopting the latest scent products.

Despite exceptional eyesight and fair hearing, big-game animals ultimately operate and survive with their noses. White-tailed deer, in particular, locate and keep track of one another, and communicate with other deer through an array of glandular secretions and urine. All mammals locate food by following their noses. Big-game animals also avoid danger by trusting their noses, especially when it comes to human odor: Wild animals think you stink!

The savvy bowhunter uses the world of scent, and scent elimination, to their advantage. Various glandular or food-based scents bring target animals beneath your stands or near your blinds. Perhaps more importantly, scent-elimination products destroy human odors to help bowhunters get closer.

To follow are some of the hottest scent products for 2015.

Attraction Scents

ScentBlocker’s new DUI—Deer Under the Influence—introduces a naturally-intoxicating effect that calms deer near your stands. The calming effect is completely new to hunting. DUI contains a powerful natural root extract which is physiologically calming and relaxing to high-strung animals. DUI, in essence, reduces the fear and flight response of deer, while also proving to be habit forming. DUI is offered in Cherry Vanilla and Apple scents, so it also acts as an attractant.

Special Golden Estrous includes premium doe urine and super-fresh estrus secretions that really get big bucks cranked up during the rut. Look for it in 1-, 4- and 8-ounce bottles.

Wildgame Innovations introduces Wild Estrus Doe Squirt and Doe Dripper—both made from 100 percent doe urine, and including patented Glo-Cote UV additive. The additive emits a neon-blue glow deer see day or night. Curious deer are drawn in to investigate, and the scent takes over as they move closer. Both are double sealed to ensure maximum freshness. Doe Squirt comes in 3-ounce, no-spill bottles. Doe Dripper comes in 3-ounce bags that drip steadily for up to 8 hours.

Dig a hole, pour in Bubbin’ Crude, and then add water. It expands in volume and releases aromatic gasses that attract deer. After deer have consumed the attractant, long-lasting residues serve as a mineral site deer will continue to visit. It comes in an easy-pour pouch.

Ozonics’ HR-200 is in a scent-elimination class of its own. The portable, 1.7-pound unit quietly blankets a hunter’s scent zone with oxidizing ozone. The HR-200 introduces electricity to oxygen (O2), fracturing the molecules and temporarily turning them into ozone (O3). The unstable ozone molecules bond to other molecules (like scent molecules) and unravels the human scent code, making it unidentifiable or destroying it outright. Ozonics offers a money-back guarantee on its technology.
