Tim Zelenka is the “idea” man and life long bowhunter. Jeff Kunkle is the guy who took the idea and made it a reality at his company Dynamic Machine.

From November 2020 Inside Archery: Victory Archery has emerged as one of archery’s dominating forces. Arrow innovations such as VAP and RIP hunting arrows, VooDoo crossbow bolts and VXT target arrows solidified Victory Archery’s place in the industry. More recent additions, such as the TKO series, Xtorsion and CarbonTrad, unequivocally cemented that place on the archery map.

Victory’s original VAP was among the very first ultra-slim diameter hunting shafts, including a .166-inch inside diameter to accept F-diameter nocks. The streamlined shaft offers a penetration advantage through reduced friction, high aerodynamic quotients and exceptional wind-bucking abilities. The Xtorsion was the first arrow to utilize a cage-like stainless steel layer incorporated into woven carbon fiber to create a stronger shaft that carries maximum kinetic energy. 

Meld those technologies and you get the new VAP-SS, combining a sleek .166-inch diameter shaft with a woven stainless steel layer infused into a 100-percent, 90-degree carbon fiber weave that’s lighter and faster than the original Xtorsion, but carries more momentum than the original VAP. Given a new insert system, the VAP-SS also includes higher F.O.C. to further boost performance.  

The VAP-SS carries what Victory labels Maxx KE Technology, a highly advanced 3K carbon weave that works to eliminate arrow torque during launch for faster paradox recovery, as well as a more uniform spine. To further elevate accuracy, each shaft is digitally spine aligned for added consistency. Victory shafts all receive a slick ICE nano ceramic coating that improves penetration and allows effortless arrow removal from high density foam targets. They are then hand fletched for optimal adhesion and alignment, using Q2I Fusion or super-durable Raptor-II vanes. 

VAP-SS shafts are offered in Elite/V1 with +/- .001-inch straightness tolerances, Gamer/V3 with .003-inch specs and Sport/V6 with .006-inch straightness. No matter the grade, each dozen is weight matched to within a ½ grain. VAP-SS arrows can be ordered in 250, 300, 350 or 400 deflections to cover any equipment setup or bowhunting need. The 250-spine VAP-SS weighs 10.8 grains per inch (gpi), marking it as ready for the largest, toughest game when combined with a heavier broadhead, or while wielding extreme draw weight. The 300 weighs 9.9 gpi and is perfect for bowhunters like me who shoot 30 inches at 70 pounds with standard weight broadheads, and place more importance on momentum-boosting mass than raw speed. Most bowhunters, shooting the national average 29 inches at 65 pounds, will choose the 350, weighing an ideal 9 gpi to quiet whitetail bows or offer dependability while pursuing Western elk. The 400 weighs 8.5 gpi, providing welcomed mass for “kinetically challenged” bowhunters shooting lower draw weight/shorter draw lengths.

VAP-SS arrows come standard with SHOK TL aluminum inserts weighing 50 grains, including standard threads and 8-grain IP Nocks. SHOK TL inserts include a shaft sleeve to strengthen the arrow tip and protect it from splintering. The Taper Lock internal stem improves strength and concentricity. IP Nocks provide beefier construction and a more positive serving grip than most standard issue .166-inch-diameter nocks. Several other component options are also available, including 95-grain stainless steel SHOK, 34-grain aluminum and 75-grain combination SS/aluminum inserts. 

Like many modern bowhunters, as compound bow technology has wrought ever-higher velocities, I’ve adopted ever-heavier arrows, believing I have all the speed needed and preferring the added dependability and penetration potential provided. In this regard the VAP-SS represents my bowhunting ideal; light enough to flatten downrange trajectory, slim enough to buck a crosswind and slip through game effortlessly, and heavy enough to smash through heavy bone if asked.
