MARRAKESH, Morocco – Brady Ellison has had an incredible run in 2016, rounding out the end of the year with a smashing start to the indoor season with a new world record. After winning the Indoor Archery World Cup Final, winning his fourth outdoor Archery World Cup Final title as the first person ever to do so, and ending the 16-year U.S. individual Olympic medal drought with a bronze in Rio, bringing his Olympic medal count to three, Ellison also picked up the individual and team World Field Champion titles.
In last year’s indoor season, this world record eluded Ellison, who tied the previous record of 597 on multiple occastions. He had commented at the 2016 Indoor World Cup event in Bangkok: “Today I tied the world record for the fourth time, and I feel confident it’s going to be mine not too long from now.”
Today Ellison, who is recovering from a recent knee surgery, is already in peak season form, finally breaking the record that had stood since early 2001 with a 598 out of a possible 600. His first half was clean, a perfect 300, and he dropped only two points in the second half of the day.
Just behind Ellison, Vic Wunderle, who had won the U.S.’s last individual Olympic medal in 2000, ranked third today with a 587.
18-year old Cassidy Cox led the U.S. compound women in scoring, ranking 6th in qualification, while Margot Stuchin, Dahlia Crook, Kali Pavlik and Babette Peyton finished 13, 15, 25 and 33rd respectively. Caroline McCracken, who was the sole U.S. entrant in the compound junior women’s competition ranked 2nd with a 572.
The Netherland’s Mike Schloesser was one point off of tying his perfect score world record of 600 with a 599 today to take the top qualification spot. Just behind, USA’s David Houser and Braden Gellenthien both scored 594 to rank 4th and 5th. Alex Wifler, Aaron Tedford and Brad Rega qualified 13, 18 and 37th respectively.
Laura Bennett Shelton qualified 13th in the recurve women’s bracket ahead of Lee Ford, 19th.
The 1/16th elimination round went as expected for the U.S. archers according to the brackets, with the exception of Wunderle who was upset 5-3 by France’s Benjamin Louche, and Stuchin who fell 143-144 to Atyeh Golafshansichani of Iran.
