Five new videos from the Archery Trade Association explain how retailers and educators can teach Explore Bowhunting to increase archery and bowhunting participation in their communities.

Explore Bowhunting is a valuable educational program that helps instructors and program leaders teach students of all ages basic bowhunting skills. ATA created the program for schools, summer camps and community-based programs, and it’s offered primarily through state wildlife agencies.

The curriculum includes 23 lessons and hands-on activities that help students understand nature, and strengthen their appreciation for wildlife and the woods.

ATA members already have access to the curriculum, but these five training videos ensure archery-shop owners and community members can better implement the curriculum and hone their teaching skills.

“These videos explain how to complete Explore Bowhunting activities in retail-store environments in a quick-and-easy format,” said Emily Beach, ATA’s senior director of outreach and education. “The videos help instructors teach the program more effectively, which will promote our sport and recruit more archers and bowhunters.”

Beach encourages retailers to use the videos to help make Explore Bowhunting activities fit their store’s needs.

“Retailers can adapt any Explore Bowhunting activity to fit their schedules, the students’ skill levels, and the store’s teaching environment — whether it’s indoor, outdoor, a woodlot or parking lot,” Beach said. “They can also use their store’s inventory to demonstrate equipment needs, which promotes sales.”

The instructional videos show retailers and community members how to:

1. teach bowhunting basics to customers;
2. feel confident when teaching bowhunting activities;
3. simplify bowhunting skills for archers;
4. and open discussions about stalking, camouflage, shot placement, bowhunting practice and much more.

Mathews recently released “DRIVE”, a short video celebrating women bowhunters, who despite obstacles and naysayers dedicate themselves to this beloved, yet demanding, sport.

The video features four women from around the country: a blacktail hunter and archery coach from northern California, a western big game hunter from Bozeman, Montana; a whitetail hunter and cattle rancher from Missouri; and arguably the most prolific and most-accomplished woman in bowhunting, Tiffany Lakosky. These women depict the dedication and work involved in bowhunting, and how training and preparation silences the doubt and propels them into their hunt with confidence.

“In an industry so full of stereotypes and criticism, we felt women needed a message that was relatable, but also inspiring,” says Mathews Content Manager, Derek Nelson. “DRIVE was created to empower women in this sport to push through the doubt and fear and give it all they’ve got.”

Amanda Caldwell, a Real Estate Agent and bowhunter from Bozeman, Montana, is featured in the video depicting the physical training required in western big game hunting and echoes the appeal of challenge. “There are a lot of highly motivated women out there rock-climbing and training for triathlons, because they love the outdoors and seek sports that physically challenge them,” says Caldwell. “I think this video helps outsiders see how empowering bowhunting can be, while also celebrating the dedicated women that are already out there crushing it.”

All four women in the piece are shooting Mathews’ new women’s bow, the 2017 AVAIL, which like the video, is designed specifically to empower female bowhunters.

For the August issue of Inside Archery, we talked with Eric Griggs of Scott Archery about his company’s cutting-edge releases and the factors that drive innovation. It was definitely one of those interviews that we walked away from feeling enlightened and refreshed.

As the internet and the digital products that accompany it continue to grow in popularity and influence, start-ups and established companies alike must tap into this goliath of a medium to stay relevant. We were fortunate enough to talk with Kelsey Scholes of QuickFire Productions for our June issue of Inside Archery and learn about how she and the QuickFire team are making waves in the outdoor industry with their cutting-edge digital productions.

Unlike other production companies, QuickFire focuses solely on the hunting, outdoor and shooting-sports industry. Their team members are experts at filming, editing and production, and they’re all outdoorsmen to boot.

They employ some of the latest digital media technology, including a drone for aerial filming, a 360-degree imaging machine that provides interactive photography, and the ability to produce 3-D animations and music from scratch.

Yet their fast turnover is perhaps their greatest quality. It generally takes about two weeks from their initial meeting with a client to have a film ready to go. They’ve even managed to make one of their high quality videos in just three days.

All in all this is a company to keep an eye on.
