Extending the life of your trail camera – Humidity and rain, can cause condensation problems in your trail cameras with the change of temperature outside. A system to minimize some of these problems might be to place a single silica gel pack in the housing of your trail camera , this will help eliminate or reduce malfunctions due to moisture and sudden change of temperature which will fog up camera lenses and create batteries sweat! Another huge advantage of using Silica gel packs is that they naturally absorb and eliminate human and household  odors en-grained in the plastic housing of your camera. They do not use chemicals that give off foreign odors which would spoke deer, they do not cover odors but they absorb them after continued use. Use this technique this coming season to ensure you capture that perfect photo or video of a giant buck on a rainy fall day or an early morning summer photo of a velvet whitetail buck on a green field.

Location, Location, Location

When picking a prime location for a trail camera set, try not to set the camera in low lying swampy areas. You will get a lot of fog on the outside of the cameras lens, especially early season. The gel packs will not mitigate the outside moisture on the camera housing, but will keep the inside of the camera dry. Be sure to check your cameras gaskets every season to ensure no dry rotting of the outer gasket liner, this will ensure the bottom of your camera is not full of standing water after a rain event. I always try and face my trail cameras directly on a trail so i can get the animal walking to it, this will ensure you get a pretty good look at the buck you are trying to hunt.

Keep That Camera Going for Years

Trail camera monitoring has become a outdoor hobby all on its own.Silica gel packs will dry out any moisture trapped in the camera and absorb battery sweat from your trail cameras,card readers or range finders. Also when winterizing your trail camera for the season when you bring them into a warm house from cold conditions, Immediately remove the batteries and memory card  and place them in a bag of silica gel for a day or two to absorb the moisture before storing them away for the season. Repeat this process with the actual camera before putting it away for the season.

I love bowhunting turkeys, being fortunate enough to chase them in several states successfully over the years. The old adage is definitely true when it comes to bowhunting wild turkey: Roosted doesn’t mean roasted, but if you get on a pattern and use the terrain and seasonal preferences to your advantage, you can consistently arrow a tom or two each spring.

In vast public settings, like National Forests or Grasslands, after arriving in an area cold I’ll spend time driving and hooting every mile or two, attempting to locate a longbeard to set up on come morning. The standard M.O. for most turkey hunters is to slip into their scouted area to determine which roost tree holds that loud-mouth, love-struck bird to set up on at O’dark thirty. I love to roost birds late just like everyone else but when the toms aren’t talking you may have to use different tactics to get them to give up their location, or aggressive western tactics on open-country birds.

Don’t get me wrong, I carry the full array of box, slate, glass, diaphragm and other assorted friction calls. But if you’ve roosted a bird and come in on him the next morning, and he’s been pressured to the point his beak seems glued shut, you’ll need to get creative. Turkey hunting tactics like hitting them with coyote calls to elicit a shock gobble often does the trick for me. Coyote calls are loud, high pitched and cut through wind or dense timber, often revealing the location of a spring strutter when nothing else will.

If I’m in country with mixed open and rolling terrain I’ll spend time putting my Leupold optics to work. I’ve found turkeys often work the same circular pattern off the roost — to strutting zones, on to feeding areas, and then loafing grounds later in the day. Don’t forget your binoculars in big-field areas either. Additionally, game cameras aren’t just for whitetails. You can often track movement and pattern flocks with Swiss precision until a food or breeding cycle changes. Get some cameras out and discover where and when gobblers are spending time on their daily routes.

Advancements in decoys and ground blinds over the past 20 years is amazing and has really transformed bowhunting turkey from the realm of a fools’ errand to something that can consistently put dinner on the table.

There are so many great options I won’t get into them all here, but there’s an option that’s fairly new, and an exciting way to chase spring strutters. Kansas turkey hunter Garrett Roe developed the bow-mounted Heads Up Decoy System. With a preserved gobbler fan you can create realistic decoys shielding you from approaching birds.  A bit of ground cover helps conceal your torso, but you can really move around and intercept birds instead of being locked into cumbersome ground blinds. If you enjoy the freedom of run-n-gun hunting, give it a try and I’m sure you’ll become hooked.

Bear Archery entered the compound-bow arena back in the 1970s, when many of us still clung to recurves because we failed to see the advantages in this new approach to bow building. Bear has become a leader in compound innovation and hunter-friendly designs. Bear bows offer speed that’s on par with the biggest names out there, but they’re also smooth-shooting and quiet systems that real bowhunters appreciate. The Kuma was Bear’s 2018 flagship, and it included all of the design elements and technologies that promise to make the 2019 Kuma 30 just as popular, but in a more compact and maneuverable 30-inch package that meets the demands of today’s bowhunter.

What Bear engineers have done is scale down the Kuma 30 riser from the original 28 inches to 25 inches. The difference was taken entirely from the sections between the dual string stops and limb pockets. Everything you loved about last year’s Kuma remains intact. You just receive a shorter axle-to-axle measurement that today’s customers seem to prefer, and with a weight reduction of about 3.2 ounces. The riser was made with cutting-edge milling technology to combine balance, light weight and a low profile with a structurally-sound platform that includes strategically-placed cross struts and frontal flutes.

The Kuma 30 sports the new H-19 Hybrid Cam. The system is smooth drawing and pushes arrows to impressive speeds. The H-19 Cam’s rear valley, established by consistent string stops, feels great and encourages proper back-tension shooting. The string comes back smoothly, with no surprising peaks or troughs in the draw cycle.
