In November of 2015, National NASP® leadership and a group of NASP® educators and students met to discuss ways to further enhance the program. One recommendation was to establish a uniform incentive and recognition format to recognize and promote academic achievement for participating NASP® students. The concept of a NASP® Academic Archer was born.

In its first year of implementation, Academic Archer finished with 8,517 students enrolled. Educators from 38 US states and two Canadian Provinces implemented the NASP® Academic Archer Program with their students. Easton Technical Products became the Title sponsor of the program and recently demonstrated their full commitment to recognizing academic excellence in their decision to recognize the top Academic Archers at the upcoming NASP® National tournament. See: http://naspschools.org/news/news.php?id=1451

Now in its second year, the academic recognition program has far exceeded expectations for enrollment in states and jurisdictions across the globe as this year, Academic Archer included students from 45 states, provinces and countries.

Georgia NASP® Coordinator Jennifer Pittman said, “The NASP Academic Archer program has been a huge success in Georgia. We are now able to recognize students that participate in archery during the school day who are also excelling in academics. This pairing of archery and schoolwork is a win-win for the students and the school. I am excited that we are now able to honor these students who put the effort into their schoolwork as well as archery. I congratulate all of our Academic Archers in Georgia for their hard work and dedication.”

Indiana NASP® Coordinator and NASP® board member Tim Beck said, “Since the inception of NASP® in Indiana, the focus has always been on the students. With the addition of the Academic Archer Program we now are coming full circle, as we recognize these students for their classroom accomplishments as well as their archery skills. NASP® is truly changing lives, one arrow at a time.”

Dr. Tommy Floyd, NASP® Vice President and General Manager said, “It is our hope that every NASP® jurisdiction will enroll students in the program. We’d like to see the Academic Archer numbers top 50,000+ students someday. Continued success in the classroom will allow students to have expanded options in their chosen life path. It is our intent to continue to send the strongest of messages about how important the emphasis on learning and success in the classroom really is.”

NASP® President Roy Grimes said, “Our partner, Easton Technical Products has obviously proven their belief in recognizing and motivating students to do well in school! We believe that the more we emphasize in-school archery as an extension of the classroom, the more that educators can use programs like Academic Archer as a motivational tool, and the greater likelihood that NASP® will be around to motivate future generations of young students!”

In an ongoing National NASP student survey, 42% of them have said so, and 63% of those same students indicated that NASP makes them feel more connected with their school. Easton Technical Products (ETP) is not only paying attention, but will now recognize academically successful students at the National NASP tournament. Easton Technical Products is a Gold Medal Level Sponsor of the National Archery in the Schools Program and the Title sponsor of the NASP Academic Archer program. ETP has now elected to recognize the top scoring Academic Archers competing in the 2017 NASP National Tournament in Louisville, KY on May 11- 13, 2017.

Archers in each of the three divisions – elementary, middle school and high school. Each prize package will include Easton arrows, Easton accessories, a Delta McKenzie Target and a Hoyt bow of their choice.

In its second year of implementation, Academic Archer has currently more than doubled in participants to 18,831 students enrolled. This year’s Academic Archer enrollment closes April 30, 2017. Educators and Coaches have registered these students on the NASP tournament website throughout the school year. Educator feedback indicates that Academic Archer has been successful in recognizing academic success at the local level, and was a motivational tool to push students to do their best in the classroom.

Mark Pezzoni, President of Easton Technical Products said, “I believe that our sponsorship of the NASP Academic Archer Program is one of the best investments we make here at Easton. This program is in direct alignment to our company vision: Advancing Archery’s Legacy. The Academic Archer Program is the only effort I am aware of, that ties academic achievement to archery as a competition and team sport. If you are passionate about archery and care about next generation participation, I truly know of no better program.”

Carri Garrett of Easton Technical Products said, “These students have demonstrated their excellence in the classroom as well as on the archery range. We are proud to give them tools to continue to succeed in their pursuits. We want to encourage them to build on the archery skills learned in NASP® and maximize their archery experience whether in target archery, 3D or hunting.”

Roy Grimes, president of NASP said, “We are thrilled to have Easton Technical Products (ETP) not only as a Gold level sponsor of NASP, but as the official sponsor of NASP Academic Archer. Easton understood early on that supporting academic excellence represented half of the mission of NASP. The continued emphasis that they place on supporting teachers to engage students through in-school archery is again demonstrated in this latest announcement. ETP and NASP care about how students perform in the classroom and about getting students engaged and on target for life after high school. This is a great example of how an archery industry giant decides to support something that is truly essential for student success and can lead to life success. We believe that Easton Technical Products and the people behind it care about student success!”

Dr. Tommy Floyd, NASP Vice President and General Manager commented on the announcement saying, “Easton Technical Products has always been a tremendous partner for the NASP. This is a perfect example of where a leader in the archery industry puts their money where their mouth is! Easton sends the strongest of messages – Academic success matters! NASP archers will soon understand that when you combine archery marksmanship with scholastic excellence, someone is paying attention; and not just someone, but an archery industry leader long recognized for a commitment to archery and success.

In November of 2015, National NASP® leadership and a group of NASP® educators and students met to discuss ways to further enhance the 15 year old program. One recommendation was to establish a uniform incentive and recognition format to recognize and promote academic achievement for participating NASP® students.

The concept of a NASP® Academic Archer was born. In its first year of implementation, AA finished with 8,517 students enrolled. Educators from 38 US states and two Canadian Provinces implemented the NASP® Academic Archer Program with their students. Easton Technical Products, a long time supporter and manufacturer of the only approved NASP® arrow, began discussions with NASP® leadership about the success of the program. Easton quickly recognized the value of the AA recognition program and gladly jumped on board as its financial sponsor.

Now in its second year, the academic recognition program has currently reached over 10,000 students in 39 jurisdictions for their success in the classroom and enrollments continue through April 30th.

Roy Grimes, president of NASP® said, “We are so pleased that schools and educators continue to see NASP® as a tool to motivate their kids through AA. We are certainly excited, along with our partner, Easton Technical Products to be able to recognize our students with this type of recognition.

Dr. Tommy Floyd, NASP® Vice President and General Manager was elated that the numbers for AA have continued to climb. “Educators tell us that AA is a tool for them to motivate their student archers to succeed in the classroom. We are especially excited about those students that have to work just a little harder to qualify as an Academic Archer – In doing so, NASP® is indeed achieving one of its long-standing goals of helping to motivate students for success in the classroom. ”

“Our next step with Academic Archer will be to help provide messaging to all NASP® participants on the importance of being prepared for College and Career. While our students continue to remind us that they want to know about archery opportunities beyond NASP®, we want them all to be thinking about the appropriate steps that each of them need to take to be ready for life after high school, life after NASP®.”

After a huge success in 2016, NASP® announces the opening of The 2017 On Target For Life Awards. The OTFLA program is intended to recognize and celebrate the many instances where in-school archery, and the people involved with it, are positively impacting the lives of 2.4 million NASP® student archers each year.

Since its inception in 2002, NASP® has continued to hear powerful examples of how in-school archery has positively impacted the lives of students and adults. The OTFLA program is intended to capture examples of the “best” of what NASP® is doing in 47 states and 11 jurisdictions with both team and individual awards.

In November of 2015, National NASP® leadership and a group of NASP® educators/coaches and students met to discuss ways to further enhance the 16 year old program. A system of recognitions and awards to capture the many “positives” that go on behind the scenes of NASP® was recommended. As a result, the following awards and recognitions will be recognized at the 2016 National NASP® tournament:

The Community Service Award is a team award that will go to a NASP® team that makes a substantial positive impact to its community. Evidence should be provided to clearly illustrate where NASP® students and coaches decided, as a team, to voluntarily make an outstanding positive difference for those around them. Community members that can confirm the community impact should be involved in the nomination, and the school administration should also be included.

The Bullseye Award is an individual award for a NASP® Student that has made notable positive strides in academic performance and behavior through their involvement with the program. As the name implies, this student is an example of the positive turnaround impact that survey data continues to imply for NASP® participants. This student, through their positive attributes and participation in NASP®, is now recognized as an ambassador for the NASP® program and their school community. Nomination should include the school principal.

The Superhero Award is an individual award intended to recognize an unpaid volunteer that makes an outstanding positive impact on their NASP® program or team. This award, recommended by the NASP® advisory students, is a way to capture the immeasurable positive impact of the many NASP® volunteers that support students in the program. Evidence should include examples of how the “Superhero” goes above and beyond in their support of their NASP® students.

The Courage Award is an individual award for a NASP® student that has overcome a major life event or disability, yet continues to inspire others through their participation in NASP®. They are an ambassador for NASP® and for what participation in it, represents for them. This is a student that continues to lead, inspire and provide hope to others as a NASP® student.

The Outstanding Alumni Award is an individual award for a former NASP® graduate that experienced the positives of NASP®, and now continues to give back to their former school or team. They provide obvious service, support and/or a positive role model for current NASP® students to emulate. Clear evidence should be provided to explain how this individual is obviously supporting their previous NASP® program by “paying it forward.” Examples of how this individual has supported the program are pivotal in the decision making for this award.

Coach of the Year Award is an individual award for a NASP® educator/coach. The educator/coach must be nominated by at least the majority of the NASP® students of his/her team or class. The award must have the support and co-nomination of the school administration. This award is not dependent on success or even participation in current NASP® tournament structure. The nominee must have a proven history of making an overwhelming positive difference in the lives of participating NASP® students. This is a student-nominated award specifically recognizing attributes of the coach beyond just their ability to teach the fundamentals of archery. Specific examples of how the coach has gone above and beyond in the lives of their NASP® students is pivotal in the decision making for this award.

NASP® On Target for Life Award Nomination instructions

It’s all too easy to feel alone in the world when you’re a small business owner. The entire concept of owning a business goes hand in hand individualism, but the archery industry has some unique options that aren’t available to the vast majority of other small businesses. There are a lot of organizations that are solely dedicated to increasing archery participation and laying foundations for future growth. Here are some of the allies that are already out there, and the ways they can help an archery pro-shop thrive.

Buying Groups

When considering organizations that help archery dealers, buying groups cannot be overlooked. They offer a lot of perks that many dealers find indispensable:

• Better prices: Buying groups reduce retailers’ overhead costs by combining the purchasing power of shops nationwide. Retailers get the same products they would buy on their own, but at much lower prices. Some buying groups also use their muscle to pay quarterly, annual or performance-based dividends to members.

• Improved payment options: Rather than paying multiple manufacturers for various products, buying groups combine a retailer’s bill for products into one payment. Manufacturers like this because they process only one invoice rather than hundreds of smaller invoices. Advances in Internet communications and other digital technology further streamline billing and receivables, eliminating paper and enhancing convenience for all parties involved.

• Marketing opportunities: Manufacturers get more bang for their buck by incentivizing entire buying groups to stock and sell certain products. Normally, they seldom contact individual businesses with special product/deal/marketing campaigns, but it’s convenient to ask buying groups to share something with their members. This gives retailers the chance to offer unique products or point-of-purchase items they normally wouldn’t stock. Some manufacturers go even further by providing buying-group members advertising programs from their professional marketing teams. Buying groups extend that expertise to their members, benefiting both parties by increasing exposure and sales.

• Access to the latest technology: Small businesses seldom have the time, money or knowhow to stay current with cutting-edge technology. Buying groups provide members with access to diverse digital advancements. Therefore, retailers can easily and conveniently oversee product shipments, inventory quantities and claims processing electronically. This means less hassle and fewer errors.

• Business advice: Small-business owners usually aren’t surrounded by friends and family who own small businesses themselves, let alone one in the same industry. This means when times are tough and difficult decisions must be made they struggle to find solid, informed answers. Another buying-group perk is simply picking up the phone and discussing important choices with an industry expert who’s invested in the small business’s success. Buying groups must also know which items are hot – or will be hot – each year. Such information is vital to negotiating the group’s best contracts with manufacturers. Therefore, as shop owners plan their inventory needs, they have easy access to well-informed industry experts.

• Networking: A buying group’s greatest strength is its combined buying power, but people easily overlook its combined brain power. Buying groups build bonds between independent retailers, making life in a niche market more inclusive and less isolated. Buying groups often host special events for members, including their own buying shows. Besides being a great place to share hunting stories and make new friends, these gatherings are excellent forums for exchanging ideas and sharing ways to fix common issues. This can also help those who are considering selling their business. What better place to find potential buyers than a gathering of like-minded small-business owners? In fact, the buying group might help a member find a suitable buyer. After all, the group wants every member to succeed.

• Extra time: All these perks offer another hidden bonus to retailers: spare time. Because the buying group is handling things like marketing, negotiating contracts, monitoring technology, and scouting the season’s hottest products, the small-business owner has more time to interact with customers and employees. In fact, a buying group’s most valuable asset could be reducing stress for its members and allowing them to focus more on customer service.

NABA

NABA, a nonprofit organization, formed in 1995 with help from former PSE sales representatives Jerry Morrison and Scott Eastman in the aftermath of the Central Oregon Buying Group’s demise. That group’s treasury had a $225 balance at the time, which fueled NABA’s launch. The original board of directors included Norm and Tom Geertsen from Broken Arrow Archery of Milwaukie, Oregon; John Schauble, All seasons Archery in Boise, Idaho; John Nelson, Little Johns Archery in Roseville, California; and Wayne Piersol, Archery Only in Newark, California.

In 2003 they attended the ATA Trade Show, establishing a relationship that has attracted more dealers for NABA and expanded its membership base in Eastern states. NABA has grown about 10 percent each year, and currently has about 375 retailers on its rolls. NABA also hosts its own annual buying show in Reno, Nevada, where members network and address their inventory needs.

ARRO

ARRO has roots extending to 1968, but was incorporated by Gordon Bentley of Oregon, Wisconsin, in 1981. It was once known as the Archery Lane Operators Association. ARRO is independently owned and operated, with Bentley’s daughter Lynn Stiklestad serving as its executive secretary and administrative director. It emphasizes bowhunting and competitive shooting in its membership, and supports ranges, leagues and 3-D shooting. With its community of experts, ARRO provides members with great product discounts, and valuable resources and networking. ARRO prides itself on being a member/stockholder cooperative buying group, meaning its members are stockholders who receive annual dividends.

S3DA and NASP

While buying groups interact directly with the business side of a pro-shop, there are a lot of organizations that provide assistance through different avenues. Younger generations must get involved with archery for the industry to have a solid future, and these are some of the organizations ensuring that happens.

S3DA

The Scholastic Archery Association, DBA Scholastic 3-D Archery, was created to foster, educate and guide youth interested in 3-D and target archery.

They consider themselves responsible for:

Sanctioning and conducting national, local/state, and regional 3-D and target archery competitions and championships.

Selecting, supporting, and managing teams and staff for 3-D and target archery competitions.

Creating and maintaining the resources and infrastructure with local sportsman’s clubs that are necessary to support the growth of youth and high school 3D and target archery in the United States of America.

Promoting the growth and development of instructional and competitive archery programs in the educational institutions in the United States of America.

Establishing and enforcing rules, regulations, and procedures concerning eligibility to compete in order to ensure fair competition.

Recently they’ve really been picking up steam. Big-name sponsors like Bear Archery, Papes, Trophy Ridge and Extreme Archery Products have allowed them to appoint coordinators for each state. These state coordinators oversee all aspects of the S3DA program in their respective state, including organizing tournaments, dividing the state into regions that will allow S3DA participants multiple monthly competition venues as close as possible to their home location, and recruiting and hiring regional coordinators to oversee and manage these individual regions.

NASP

While S3DA has been providing young adults and competitive archers with quality tournaments, NASP has been instilling a passion for archery early on.

They focus on three main things:

Archery Curriculum: Units of study that focus on education, conservation, and target archery written by experts to meet state and national educational standards. This enables NASP to speak the language of educators who are intent on teaching core content throughout the school day. These units were designed for inclusion in a school’s physical education curriculum but in a few NASP schools these archery lessons are presented by history, language, art, and even Spanish teachers.

Teacher Training: Instructor Training was developed so teachers in every participating school could be certified to present NASP lessons that are safe for students, instructors, bystanders and the facility. To date more than 50,000 people have been certified by NASP. During the training, teachers learn how to set up and operate a safe archery range in their gymnasium.

Universal Fit Archery Equipment: NASP uses highly standardized gear that’s safe, durable, economical, and most importantly, a universal fit for almost every student. In NASP, learning the process of shooting is stressed far more than arrow scores. The only bow used in NASP is a Genesis compound, which has no let-off and is adjustable from 10-20 pounds in draw weight at any draw length. Only full-length aluminum arrows are used in NASP to fit every student and to preserve NASP’s perfect safety record.

These companies sow the seeds for the future of archery. Keep an eye on them to watch their continuing development. A local tournament or event could be a great way to get interested younger archers in your pro-shop.

ATA

The ATA is probably the first thing that comes to mind when one considers organizations growing archery. The Archery Trade Association works year-round for the industry, and its role is only growing. Programs like their Retail Growth Initiative and Explore Bowhunting form a two-pronged strategy for making dealers more successful.

The Retail Growth Initiative helps dealers on the storefront side of things, showing them ways to make their business more appealing and profitable. This program focuses on increasing foot traffic to stores, increasing traffic to websites, increased shooting range profits, and increasing equipment sales. This program is 100 percent free to ATA members and truly worth checking out.

Explore Bowhunting works on the other side, increasing interest in bowhunting to ultimately drive more customers to archery shops. Explore Bowhunting is an educational program designed to help instructors, program leaders and educators teach students ages 11-17 the basic skills of bowhunting. The Archery Trade Association has created this program to spark an interest and passion for bowhunting in today’s youth. Through these hands-on experiences students gain confidence interacting with the natural environment and strengthen their appreciation for wildlife and the woods. Explore Bowhunting is offered nationwide through state wildlife agencies. Educators can receive the complete Explore Bowhunting curriculum packet by attending a development workshop. Contact your state wildlife agency to locate and register for an Explore Bowhunting workshop near you.

Meanwhile, the ATA also acts as a strong-arm for the archery industry for legislative and legal issues.

USA Archery and World Archery

Although USA Archery and World Archery are currently up to their neck with Olympic archery coverage and promotion, they work year round to place archery in front of the eyes of the public. They work hard to promote archery, support athletes, and provide valuable resources for the industry as a whole.

An excellent recent example just occurred.

USA Archery partnered with First Lady Michelle Obama and her “Let’s Move!” initiative. The program’s goal is to get more kids healthy and active by capitalizing on the Olympic and Paralympic spirit this summer. USA Archery and many national governing bodies affiliated with the U.S. Olympic Committee made this commitment to the Partnership for a Healthier America to provide beginner athletic programming to kids in their communities during the year ahead. As part of the commitment, USA Archery will facilitate grants for archery kits, programming and instructor certification to help grow archery. Its goal is to introduce 50,000 children to the sport through the Explore Archery and Junior Olympic Archery Development program during the next 12 months.

This is another excellent organization that’s solely devoted to celebrating archery and the people who love it.

Check out USA Archery’s website and World Archery’s website to learn more about the resources they provide.

JOAD

US Archery also sponsors JOAD (Junior Olympic Archery Development), a nationwide program that provides youth age 8 to 20 with ongoing archery classes to help them progress from beginner to advanced level archery, at their own pace. This is another great organization getting kids involved.
Easton Foundations

Created by Jim Easton, CEO of Jas. D. Easton, Inc., the Foundations support the building and/or operation of outdoor and indoor archery facilities at city parks, schools, universities and sports complexes throughout the U.S. In addition to these facilities, the Foundations provide programs to train aspiring archers, trainers, coaches and administrators.

The first Easton Sports Development Foundation was created in 1984 with the mission to introduce this lifetime activity and historic Olympic-style sport of archery to more people in Southern California. The success of that effort led to the formation in 2006 of a second Easton foundation, Easton Sports Development Foundation II.

The Easton Foundations sponsor a variety of programs to increase the awareness of archery. Among the programs initiated by ESDF are Olympic Archery in Schools (OAS), which helps schools to form archery teams to compete in a unique league. The Foundation also sponsored the 2009 Archery Youth World Cup and the 2010-2012 Archery World Cups in Ogden, UT and runs various youth archery programs from its Archery Centers in Newberry, FL; Salt Lake City, Utah and Van Nuys, CA.

Easton Sports Development Foundation II (ESDFII) also awards several grants every year to clubs, programs, schools, colleges and universities, and organizations that propose archery-related plans or projects. Check out the Easton Sports Development Foundation website to learn more.

As the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP®) conducted its World bulls-eye competition in Myrtle Beach, so too was the International Bowhunting Organization (IBO) conducting its World 3D Challenge.

The NASP/IBO 3D Challenge (3D Challenge) was originally designed for the sixty-five percent of NASP students who wanted to play the 3D archery game. These NASP student archers wanted a more “realistic” experience. The 3D Challenge uses targets that are foam replicas of specific animals instead of multi-colored scoring rings. These foam targets simulate turkey, coyote, bear, antelope, deer, and bighorn Sheep made by Rinehart Targets. The archers use the same bows and arrows that they used in the bulls-eye competition, and they shoot from identical distances of ten to fifteen meters. The target’s nine and ten-point scoring rings are exactly the same size as on the bulls-eye targets.

Attending this years NASP World Tournament were 4,135 students, and 1,120 of those archers participated in the IBO/3D section of the event. The top five males, top five females, and top three teams in the elementary, middle, and high school divisions won medals, plaques, and trophies.

While the students and their on-looking family members love the exciting action, the competition was intense! Each archer shot 5 arrows for practice and 30 scored arrows. The top score possible was 300 points. Teams were comprised of 5-12 archers of mixed gender. The top 5 archer’s scores were summed with the top possible being 1,500 points.

In the ES Division, Matthew Harper of Zanesville, Ohio received top honors by scoring a 290. Matthew is a third grader at Maysville Elementary. Caitlin Blair, was the overall female in the elementary division, with a score 291. Caitlin is from Lancaster, Ohio and is a fourth grader at Fairfield Christian Academy.

In the MS Division, the top male went to seventh grader, Henry Thompson, with a score of 297. Henry lives in Lawrenceburg, KY and attends Anderson Co. Middle School. Sixth grader Emma Bunch and seventh grader Lily Machart tied with a score of 291, in the MS female division. After a five-arrow tiebreaker, Emma Bunch received the top spot. Emma is from Benton, Louisiana and attends Benton Middle School.

In the HS school division, eleventh grader, Cole Luburgh and ninth grader, Garet Fyke both shot a 291, which lead to another, five-arrow tiebreaker. Garet of Duncan Falls, Ohio, received top honors, and he attends Philo High School. The top female in this division went to Tabitha Way, who shot a 291. She is an eleventh grader at Carolina Warriors Homeschool AR and lives in Chesnee, South Carolina.

Congratulations to all of the winners!

The first place teams in each division were; East Elementary from Cullman, Al with 1,366 points, Benton Middle from Benton, Louisiana with 1,436 points, and Anamosa High from Anamosa, Iowa recorded 1,454 points.

A big thanks to South Carolina’s Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) for providing most of the lane officials that made the event possible. As the 2016 World Tournaments come to a close, students prepare for the All-Stars Competition on July 10, 2016 in South Africa, while others begin preparing for their respective state and provincial tournaments next spring. The sponsors of the IBO made this event possible. June 27, 2016

Waves weren’t the only thing hitting Myrtle Beach, South Carolina shores this past week as students, parents, and coaches from all over the United States and Canada, flocked like seagulls to the 2016 National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP®) World Tournament. The tournament took place at the Myrtle Beach Sports Center, where more than four thousand student archers participated at this year’s archery competition. Jessica Vanco, Assistant General Manager of the Sports Center offered, “The NASP 2016 World Tournament was the largest event to date at the Sports Center since our opening in March 2015. The mental energy, focus, and discipline of these young archers was very impressive and inspiring to watch. From the spectators to the coaches, their sportsmanship was commendable.”

The tournament began on June 23 and went through June 26. There were twenty-six flights and one hundred seventy-two students per flight. Of course, as usual, teams were made up of twelve to twenty-four students, with a minimum of four males or four females on each team. Participation totals this year were 4,135 for the bulls-eye and 1,120 in the 3D tournament. Forty-nine percent of the shooters were female and fifty-one percent were males, making this year’s female to male ratio the most balanced in NASP®’s 15-year history.

Archers and teams hailed from a wide range of states. In the Elementary Division, the top male shooter was Gavin Keirns, from Crooksville, Ohio. He attends Crooksville Elementary and scored 289. The top elementary female was Savannah Philpot, from London, KY. She attends Bush Elementary School, and her score was a whopping 295. Savannah established a new NASP® World Record for Elementary Female with this outstanding performance.

In the Middle School (M.S.) Division, the top male scorer was Chase Herndon with a 296. Chase is from Chauncey, West Virginia. He attends Beth Haven Christian School. The top female in this category was Ashlie Garrison with a score of 293. Ashlie attends Newburgh, Indiana’s Castle North Middle School.

In the High School (H.S.) division, the top males were Dalton Talbert and Caleb Stillians who tied with a score of 299 (29 tens). After the 5-arrow tiebreaker, Dalton Talbert took the top honors. Dalton is from Zanesville, Ohio, and he attends Maysville H.S. The top female in the H.S. division was Morgan Daily, with a score of 294. Morgan is from Evansville, Indiana, and attends Reitz Memorial High.

Finally, the overall championship shooters for female and male divisions were earned by Dalton Talbert and Savannah Philpot. Savannah has made NASP® history by being the first 5th grade student to achieve overall female archer for the entire 4-12th grade competition. Congratulations, Savannah!

The world tournament awards ceremony, sponsored by Academy Sports+ Outdoors, was kicked off by Myrtle Beach Mayor John Rhodes who announced, “We host a great number of sporting events, and without any question, the attendees at this archery tournament were some of the most respectful athletes our community has ever experienced… We will welcome NASP® back with open arms!” Everyone appreciated that this tournament was brought to Myrtle Beach due to strong support by the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources.

As a non-profit, NASP®’s in-school archery instruction and events are made possible by a variety of medal-level sponsors including; Mathews, Mission, and Genesis Archery, Morrell Targets, Easton Technical Products, Gordon Composites, National Wild Turkey Federation, Easton Foundations, Cabela’s Outdoor Fund, Feradyne Outdoors, Rinehart Targets, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, & EA Promotions. For a complete list of NASP® sponsors see their website.

Only one tournament remains in NASP®’s 2016 tournament series. The NASP®/IBO 3D Outdoor World Challenge will be held August 12-14 at Seven Springs Resort, Seven Springs, PA (schedule here). In just a few weeks, the 2016-17 school year will begin and NASP® lessons for more than 2 million student archers will start again.

NASP® Press Release

When millions of happy customers make a purchase at their local Cabela’s store, they’re asked if they’d like to “round up” the total to the nearest whole dollar to help a worthy outdoor cause. Those who respond agree, are saying yes to helping millions of eager youth to discover their interest and aptitude for archery.

The National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP®) is pleased to announce, it is one of the newest grant recipients of the Cabela’s Outdoor Fund (COF). This spring, COF became a NASP® Gold Medal Sponsor with it’s award of $100,000 to NASP®, the world’s largest, private youth archery program.

Cabela’s Outdoor Fund is a non-profit organization dedicated to efforts that promote and protect hunting, shooting sports, trapping, fishing, camping and conservation. This fund is possible through donations from generous Cabela’s customers who choose to “round up” their purchases to the nearest dollar at Cabela’s stores. The Cabela’s Outdoor Fund contributes to other like-minded organizations in communities across the country working to make the great outdoors even better.

NASP® is a 15-year old non-profit youth target archery program presented by educators as part of a school’s curriculum to students in grades 4-12. Last school year more than 2.3 million students, in 14,000 schools located in 47 states, 8 Canadian provinces, and 9 other countries participated in NASP®. At its US National tournament in early May, the record for the world’s largest archery tournament was set again, by NASP® at 12,897 students.

Cabela’s Outdoor Fund support will be applied in two areas. Half the donation will be used to increase NASP®’s annual equipment grant. Once teachers at a school become NASP®-certified they must purchase a $3,100 NASP® equipment kit including: 12 Genesis bows, 120 Easton aluminum arrows, Morrell, Block, or Rinehart targets, backstop curtain, and bow racks. New schools, recommended by their jurisdiction’s coordinator, are provided up to $1,000 towards this new equipment. Over the past five years of this equipment grant, more than 2,000 new schools have been provided such grants. This grant by COF will lead to about sixty-six new schools joining the program. According to participation surveys, this means about 7,800 students will be added to NASP® participation roles in 2016-2017.

The other 50% of these grant funds have been awarded in the form of cash scholarships to 143 student archers at various states’ NASP® Championships this past February-April. These scholarship funds are held in the student’s name until they decide to pursue education after high school. When the student contacts NASP® with his or her plans, checks are made to the educational institution and sent to the student to use as financial aid. To date NASP® has awarded $926,000 in cash scholarships!

“The National Archery in the Schools Program has an amazing impact on the lives of thousands of young students and outdoor enthusiasts. Not only are they introduced to archery and the great outdoors, these students build life-long friendships and are given opportunities for scholarships,” said Scott Wanetka vice president of Cabela’s Outdoor Fund. “Cabela’s Outdoor Fund is proud to support NASP® as a Gold Member Sponsor.”

NASP® President, Roy Grimes offers, “We at the National Archery in the Schools Program®, are humbled and grateful for this strong show of support. More important than the financial contribution, is the confidence Cabela’s Outdoor Fund has demonstrated for NASP® and its mission to change millions of lives, one arrow at a time. “

NASP is designed to engage students in experiential learning and improve participation in outdoor-type activities among students of all athletic abilities. DEC is involved in the program to introduce young people to archery and other shooting sports, a common way to become interested in hunting and the outdoors.

“The National Archery in the Schools Program started in New York in 2008 and has grown rapidly since then,” Acting Commissioner Seggos said. “This cooperative effort between conservation agencies, school districts, and private organizations is a great way to bring the sport of archery to thousands of students across the state. Archery requires precision and practice, and allows students of all athletic abilities to compete equally for top honors.”

As part of this program, an annual competition is held statewide between participating schools. The second annual New York State NASP tournament was held with great success on March 4 in Utica New York, with 513 students from 23 school districts participating in three divisions: High School, grades 9-12; Middle School, grades 6-8; and Elementary School, grades 4-5.

The overall top female archer in the tournament was Jordan Sands from Hinsdale High School in Cattaraugus County with a score of 276 out of 300. The top male archer in the tournament was Jonathon Pecora from St. Joseph by the Sea High School in Richmond County with a score of 274 out of 300. Each received a trophy, a Genesis bow and bow case, a Morrell target and a dozen arrows. Awards were also given out in each of the three divisions for first through fifth places.

Scott has worked tirelessly on behalf of the students at the Brompton School. Below is an excerpt from his nomination illustrating the kind of impact he has made as a NASP® volunteer. Scott was recognized at the 2016 NASP® National Awards Ceremony in Louisville KY on May 14, 2016.

His nominators said, “Scott goes above and beyond any other person involved in the NASP® program at Brompton. He’s a coach, equipment repairman, salesman, and grant writer. There is very little that is done in this program that Scott is not intimately involved in. Without Scott’s dedication, our kids would not be nearly as successful as they have been so far in only our second year. His hard work, dedication and love of archery are evident in every aspect of the program.

He single-handedly built our current team of over 40 participants at the Brompton School in Kenosha. In the 2 years since the team’s inception, he has developed three different archery teams and the numbers continue to grow! All archery team members who went to the state tournament this year that had attended last year improved on their score – some as much as 100 points! Scott is a disabled veteran with multiple sclerosis and recently announced that the archery teams help him stay active and credited the children and their involvement in the team with keeping his health up by keeping him so active!

Many weeks Scott is at the school daily teaching archery. He has even started a family archery night as an opportunity to involve everyone in the school and to build interest in the program he loves and believes in so much. Beyond coaching, Scott has taken hours upon hours of her personal time to write grants and seek out sponsorship for the team so that we could not only have the equipment needed but expand our program as well.”

The National Archery in the Schools Program is proud to recognize Scott Cleland for his “Super” dedication to his local NASP® program. Because of Scott’s Superman status, Brompton School will receive a $500 Equipment grant from NASP® in his name.
