But that isn’t all.

They offer shooters multiple indoor and outdoor options. Their indoor range features both a 3D and paper target range. The indoor 3D is a 30 target/arrow range and the paper range has target bales to sight in from 10 to 35 yards. The outdoor 3D range is 30 targets on 10 wooded acres with 3 elevated shooting platforms and many different shooting situations to simulate hunting. It’s open 365 days a year with shooting positions for compound and traditional equipment as well as for men, women, youth, & children. Leagues include outdoor 3D, indoor 3D and indoor paper spot targets.

Big-name archery gear can be found there including Mathews Archery, Hoyt, Bowtech, Diamond, and Mission bows along with Easton, T.R.U. Ball, TRUGLO, SKB and so many more.

Hall’s Arrow is a great example of how archery can create an enduring legacy. Like industry pioneers Fred Bear and Jim Easton, Art Hall formed a passion for the bow and arrow during the first half of the 20th century. By the early 1950s, he was perfecting his home-made arrows, winning tournaments, and sharing his shooting secrets with friends and interested fellow archers.

What started as hobby in a basement became a small and demanding business in 1959. Hall continued to make his own arrows and pass his knowledge along to those interested. New England’s weather cycle made year-round outdoor practice impossible, and so in 1964 Hall expanded his business yet again to make the first indoor archery range in New England.

Richard Johnson III said Hall’s Arrow uses social media more than ever, but still finds that paper fliers and newsletters are effective for generating business.

Another awesome feature that Hall brought to his shop is the innovative automatic target return system. In an effort to avoid the “hold ups” that come with a standard archery range when shooters collect their arrows, Hall developed an overhead track system that brings the arrows back to the archer. You can see it in action in the background of this quick video:

Hall’s legacy of providing new and seasoned archers alike with the latest gear, knowledge and a place to shoot lives on to this day. Check out their website http://www.hallsarrow.com to learn more, and consider stopping by next time you find yourself in Connecticut.

Thinking outside the box goes a long way in entrepreneurial endeavors. Chris “Critter” Boucher and Andy “Woodeye” Woods, owners of Critters Wolf River Sports and Woodeye’s Bar & Grill, took that notion to heart when they created a business that combines an archery range/pro shop with a bar & grill.

Chris Boucher has been in the archery business for two decades. His first shop covered a mere 400 square feet. Two years later, in 1998, he upgraded to a building that covered 1,800 square feet. He remained in that building until 2006, when he teamed up with Andy Woods to create their current 16,200 square-foot enterprise.

Their current arrangement comes with a variety of pros. As the largest archery range/pro shop in Wisconsin, they provide gear and service work for customers from across state and beyond. The bar & grill side of the business helps sustain their large amount space by serving quality food to sporting-goods customers and practicing archers in addition to regular clientele that just want a burger and cold beer. This unique shop is one to keep an eye on.

Woodeye’s Bar & Grill is a popular restaurant, especially on Friday nights when it features a fish fry.

Teijo Villa is the owner of Tao’s Archery Service in Thunder Bay, Ontario. He was selected as the subject of our recent Inside Retailing column because his shop is a prime example of a pro shop that turns steady profits from high-end tuning.

The term ‘laser precision’ has been so overused that it’s practically become a cliché. Many businesses and products tout this quality, yet few can actually live up to it. The recent subject of Inside Archery’s Inside Retailing, Teijo Villa, actually does harness laser precision for incredibly accurate bow tuning.

“I use five different lasers for bow tuning,” Villa said. “Everything is right down to a thousandth of an inch. That’s just how I am. In my trade, I use lasers to align machinery. I might need the alignment to be .0005-inch for steam turbine, so I expect perfection. A human hair is about .002-inch thick and paper is .005-inch, so take a piece of paper and split it 20 times and you’ll get the alignment I need on a steam turbine.”

It’s truly inspiring to see how technology and passion are constantly pushing this industry to the cutting edge. Ultimately it will always come down to the particular shooter for this laser precision to manifest itself in remarkably tight groups, but it never hurts to get that extra leg up with the latest technology and techniques.

Select Archery has been in business since 2009, and Darrell & Tracey Stiennen have owned it since March 2015. We recently interviewed them for our Inside Retailing column because they’re an excellent example of an archery pro shop with flexible options for the offseason. Regardless of how much of an archery-purest a shop owner may be, sometimes it takes a little branching out to ensure a steady flow of customers in the offseason. An intereting example of this that we gleaned from speaking with them is selling kayaks.

“Kayaks have been our biggest surprise this spring,” the Stiennens said. “We’ve been carrying Bibe coolers, and brought in some Bibe fishing kayaks as kind of a favor. Our phone has been ringing off the hook. We sold out. They’re equipped with rod holders, and you can mount a fish finder.”

A common problem in that vein, which many retail shop owners are faced with isn’t new by any means. It can be hard to get new customers, let alone consistent customers, to give your store a shot, especially when the hunting season isn’t in full swing. These days, a clean and helpful website can be one of the best ways to overcome that hurdle. While we were learning more about Select Archery, we noticed their website is an excellent example of this. The design is simple and clean. There’s also interactive calendar for simple tournament organization.

For modern retailers, that means diversifying the physical landscape of their business as well as their presence in the virtual world. A prime example of this flexibility both online and in the storefront is X10 Archery in Houston, Texas. Lynda LeCompte, owner of X10 Archery, was interviewed by Inside Archery for the April issue’s Inside Retailing column because her store made waves by using speakers and seminars to boost profits. During the course of the interview, we also learned that on top of enticing customers through expert speakers, X10 Archery is available to be rented out for birthday parties and office gatherings. Check out their informative and clean website, (http://www.x10archery.com/ ) which like the physical store, is a prime example of how a modern retailer should utilize every tool available to attract business.
